Brown Babies Books

Brown Babies Books Brown Babies Books is Black, woman-owned indie children's bookstore Our Founder Tameca's favorite book as a child was Corduroy. Why?

While the book featured a storyline about a cute little brown teddy bear from a department store toy aisle with a desire to be purchased; it’s not what made the book her favorite. Nope, Corduroy was cute, but Lisa is what drew her to the story and captured her attention. Because Lisa looked like her- a little brown girl with freshly pressed hair, a frugal mother, and a determination to get the teddy bear of her dreams. It was the first time Tameca had seen a black/brown character in a storybook. Even at the age of 4, she knew the importance of that piece. That is when her love of reading began and ultimately led to the creation of Brown Babies Books.

Those of us who know - we have been warning you and begging you to please get your kids AND teens into reading real books 🥺

There’s a reason so many of us opened our indie bookstores between the years of 2016-2021! We are battling for our future as a society. This is NOT just a them vs us matter. Yes, you know me and I stand 10 toes down that representation in children’s literature friggin matters. However, it’s not just children of color/people of color who cannot read, think independently, communicate effectively or use critical thinking skills. 😩

All of which naturally strengthen by merely reading. That’s the sauce - read. Do it daily. Encourage your kids and teens to read and stop judging them on what they’re reading because you don’t think it’s challenging enough or you don’t want them to ask you clarifying questions about the book and plot - 👀 yes I’m talking to you. The goal is for them to read and want to do it on their own. That’s it. Our future as a society depends on our youth not being dumb. 😐
