The vine that ate the South!🌿

This photo was taken, luckily, not in downtown Chickamauga, but just a few miles away in Walker County, and shows one of the many large kudzu patches that dot the local landscape. Brought to the southeast in the 1870s and then spread across the region intentionally up until the 1950s as both a decorative plant and a way to stop soil erosion, the vine is now out of control and one of the worst invasive species in the region.

While kudzu is bad news for our local environment, you can’t deny that it creates some truly eerie scenery in the places it takes over.

Are spirits more active in the Fall?

Some paranormal researchers believe that strange activity picks up in the autumn as we draw closer to events like Halloween due to old stories and traditions that say that the line between the world of the living and the dead begins to blur during this time of year. Other folks, though, think it has more to do with the fun of the spooky season, and more people looking to be spooked!

Views from Point Park, where you can learn what happened after the Battle of Chickamauga!

After the Confederate victory at Chickamauga, the Confederates took the nearby mountains and ridges and began to use them to besiege Chattanooga, including Lookout Mountain. In November of 1863, the siege was answered by an attack by the Union once they managed to reopen nearby supply lines, leading to the famous ‘Battle Above the Clouds’ that took place on Lookout Mountain.

Today, Point Park is a large memorial park at the top of the mountain that commemorates the battle and has amazing views of Chattanooga below!
