A few years ago, this team could help 20,000 people after a disaster in the Philippines. Last time, they reached 300,000.

What changed? They stopped flying everything in. Serena Kelsch’s organization hired five local professionals and started sourcing relief supplies from local markets. Faster response, more jobs in the community, and a smaller footprint.
As she puts it: "You can serve more, you can help more when you think about things that way."

Serena joins Andy Keller on the new episode of the ChicoBag Podcast to talk disaster relief, local sourcing, and what recovery really takes.

Load it with towels, snacks, and a change of clothes. When it’s empty, fold it into its own pouch and clip it to the stroller so it isn’t taking up your whole trunk between beach days.

For years, Central Washington's Bag Monster has been a woman named Lori Rae Amodio.

Yakima County Solid Waste bought the costume from us a long time ago. Lori wore it to schools, to Arborfest, to Earth Day Yakima, showing kids what 500 plastic bags in a single year looks like on one person. When the costume finally wore out, she sewed herself a new one and kept going.
That's roughly 20 years at the county. In that time she's also recovered bikes for Kiwanis Free Bikes 4 Kidz, pulled garden supplies for the Yakima Master Gardeners, looked after the landfill's feral cat colony, and in 2012 she donated her left kidney to a former coworker.

On July 8 she was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in her lungs. The tumors are positioned where surgery isn't an option. She's starting chemotherapy and radiation at the same time.

Her coworkers set up a GoFundMe for treatment and living costs.

Good Shepherd's Clothes Closet gave away $1.4 million in clothing last year. For free. With 2.5 paid staff.

On the ChicoBag Podcast, Dave McLaughlin gives the credit to his volunteers, around 40 of them. They sort the clothes and run the five micro closets. Many also chip in the money that covers rent and electricity. No big federal grants. Most of the budget comes from people who care about their community.

Ever wonder why single-use plastic is so cheap? Kizzy Charles-Guzman of the Center for Environmental Health has an answer that stuck with us: "It's not in the price tag. It's in your medical bill."

On the ChicoBag Podcast, she broke down how to lower your everyday exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals:

Don't heat food in plastic, especially black takeout containers.
Store and reheat in glass, ceramic, or stainless.
Use cast iron instead of Teflon.

Pick one and start there. Center for Environmental Health

The people having the hardest time in this job market are often the ones who did everything right. Honor roll, Dean's list, told they'd always land on their feet.
Sam Wright from calls it the crisis of overachievers.

Why are the brands you actually want to watch winning? They stopped making ads and started making things people choose to come back to.

Huckberry began with 10,000 YouTube followers. Today their channel sits next to North Face. The shift wasn't a bigger marketing budget. They reallocated what they used to spend on paid ads into one well-made owned series called "Dirt."

This week on the ChicoBag Podcast, Andy talks with Kevin Willard, the creative director and copywriter behind brand stories for Ocean Conservancy, Hyatt, and Jack Daniels.

If you've ever wondered why we put time into a podcast instead of buying more ads, this episode answers it.
