The Ve-Po-Ad (short for Vest Pocket Adder) was a mechanical pocket calculator sold for $2.95 by the Reliable Typewriter and Adding Machine Corporation of Chicago from 1924 through at least 1940.Design and OperationStructure: Made of metal, cloth, and paper, often housed in a small cloth-covered cardboard case resembling a tiny notebook.Display: Featured eight columns of digits with nine result windows and a narrow zeroing reset rod at the top.Usage: Operated manually via a metal stylus to pull notched sliding bands, based on older 19th-century arithmograph principles.Historical ContextMarketing: Distributed heavily through mail-order catalogs as an affordable computation tool during the Great Depression era of the 1930s.Legacy: Part of a large class of pre-digital mechanical slide adders (like the Addiator) that preceded modern electronic pocket calculators.
