A truck loaded with thousands of copies of Roget's Thesaurus crashed yesterday losing its entire load. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, taken aback, stupefied, confused, shocked, rattled, paralyzed, dazed, bewildered, mixed up, surprised, awed, dumbfounded, nonplussed, flabbergasted, astounded, amazed, confounded, astonished, overwhelmed, horrified, numbed, speechless, and perplexed.

On Saturday, at an event at the Rochester Barnes and Noble, a young reader came through the line with a copy of Orris and Timble.
“I read the whole book while I was waiting,” he said.
“I hope you liked it,” I said.
“I did but I want you to sign the book in a different place.”
“Okay,” I said. “Where do you want me to sign it?”
“Page 55,” he said.
“Why this page?” I said as I signed.
“Because that part where the rat’s heart lifts up? That’s what it feels like when you make a friend.”
I stopped writing and looked up at him.
“That,” I said, “is one of the finest compliments I have ever received. Thank you.”

Why do I write for kids?
Because of this.
Because it lifts up my heart.
Because it’s like making a friend.
