One rider never made it home.

On December 7, 2024, 60-year-old rider Curtis Christians suffered fatal injuries following a crash at the SR 89 / Outer Loop Road roundabout in Chino Valley.

No post can bring him back.

But maybe his story can help save the next rider.

Every motorcyclist in Northern Arizona knows how quickly conditions can change at night. At this roundabout, many riders have expressed concerns about visibility, lane definition, and the ability to clearly see the raised curbs and truck apron after dark.

Small improvements, better reflective curb markings, enhanced lane delineation, improved warning signs, and other visibility measures, could make a meaningful difference for everyone who uses this corridor.

This isn’t about assigning blame.

It’s about asking a simple question:

If relatively small safety improvements could help prevent even one more family from receiving that phone call, shouldn’t we be talking about them?

If you’ve ridden SR 89 between Prescott and Chino Valley, share your experience in the comments.

If you believe safer roads benefit everyone—motorcyclists, drivers, first responders, and families—please share this post so the conversation reaches the people who can make a difference.

Ride safe. Drive aware.

In memory of Curtis Christians.

⚠️ ATTENTION ARIZONA RIDERS

This isn’t about politics.
This isn’t about blame.

This is about making it home.

If you’ve ridden the Highway 89 roundabouts between Prescott and Chino Valley after dark, you’ve probably experienced it.

As an oncoming vehicle approaches, the glare from its headlights can make the curbs virtually disappear. Without reflective curb paint or raised pavement reflectors, it becomes difficult to distinguish the edge of the roundabout—especially on a motorcycle.

A split-second mistake can have life-changing consequences.

Letters have already been submitted to ADOT requesting improvements to increase nighttime visibility. We are hopeful these concerns will be addressed before a serious injury or fatality occurs.
