There are days when I get to finish one project, and I feel really good about it, but then I realize that most of the things in life I’m working on are way larger than just one piece of pottery or art, because my art is more about making experiences through story and helping others see how much work went into the behind the scenes to make the art actually happen. People have been asking me recently if we’re going to do a video channel, and I would love to do more wide frame video content, buuuut I also need to finish the podcast studio that currently does not have a floor yet. I also need to make sure we have access to the basement that’s ADA friendly for pottery production, and I also need to make sure things like the roof are doing the job it should (btw, that’s not my roof thankfully hahaha, but just helping a friend after I have learned a lot about flat roofing with my own building). That’s the real nitty gritty of trips to the tool store, loving my family, also running a commercial real estate business, and just trying to make a go of it on this beautiful journey of life. I wouldn’t ask for it any other way. You can look at my camera roll and think ai’m insane, but when you look at those dance moves, I would have it any other way. P.S. bridgerh I swear I’m not keeping your floor jacks, I will get them back to you before next year (hopefully).

Primers are to help you seal your canvas after you have coated your canvas in several coats of gesso. It comes in different colors and can be a great thing to use in the inverse color of what your intend your canvas’s primary color to come out as. Basically the opposite color on the color wheel can be a great primer color, but only you will know what main color you’re hoping your final work to have, so it’s good to plan ahead. (Something I struggle with sometimes haha) thanks John Michael Cook for the help!

Acrylic primer is an interesting thing. It can be clear and can be used coat your gesso layers in order to seal them under your paint layers and make the cavas less thirsty for the water in your paints. This can help you keep your paints so much more consistent across the canvas and can be beneficial in many ways. John Michael Cook explains why this is the case!

Back by popular demand, questions people have asked John about when you would consider using certain products for painting. This is a great example and I learned a lot!

This was a double heart attack day testing out the mini kiln with wonky pots. I started these a bit late in the day on a bisque cycle (manually because it’s a sitter kiln) and I finally turned off my kiln at midnight and went to bed. I came back the next day after it had cooled and started smelling this horrible smell. My heart sunk. Did I forget to vent properly? Why does it smell like chemicals?? This is so strange they were just cooling! Upon further investigation, I found out that Northern Wireless had a customer ask to not have a white Internet disk and Zach was spray painting by the back door! Gah! It wasn’t my pots!!! Hahaha after a round of fans and fresh air everything smells great again. What a day.

Okay so this is my first test run of the mini kiln. I’ve been wanting for quite a while to install a peep hole digital pyrometer (fancy heat resistant thermometer), but I just haven’t found a long enough masonry bit to do the job yet. However, I just have to get my wonky pots FINALLY in the kiln. After months of trying to set aside time to just get 8 hours in one place so I can baby sit the kiln, today is the day. Now to get other stuff done. 😬😍🙌 We’ll see if I change clothes before unloading haha.

I am definitely working teaching myself to see. I think that’s the best part about savoring something and truly looking at an object to study the way light, shadows, and colors begin to play on one another. Like today, I looked into the distance and saw a ridge of trees. But they were almost like they had a grey overlay to them or a light grey wash because they were in the distance. As I got closer, they became more vibrantly dark green. Such an interesting thing that your brian knows all of this already. I keep being told by John, you’re never too early to learn, and I’m thankful for that. I’m thankful that it’s never too early to begin to delve into art. Side note, did you know Vera Wang is 76 years old and still designing? If some of us just were to acknowledge that it’s okay to learn and be unafraid of criticism, we wouldn’t be worried about wondering if we’ve hit our peak in life. So many people stop art because it’s schooled out of them by self elimination after one or two classes, and later in life when they retire find out that they truly loved it and would have had so much potential if they had started to unlock their joy earlier. That’s what I have been learning about. Learning to enjoy and savor life is about having a full life that you loved well rather than living for the praise of men. Let yourself be okay learning, and you will welcome so many wonderful teachers into your life.

This was the part I was struggling to understand. Engender extends your reach across the canvas. You can go farther with using it before you have to pick up your paint brush for more paint. I was nooooot getting that. Even when I went to edit this recording, I was thinking whaat exactly does this even mean?! It took me so long to make sense of it in my mind haha. Hope that’s a helpful explanation for this if you who have been sending us messages about it, this is the start of all of my questions to John Michael Cook after you all were asking me about each tool and when to use it.

Man, I feel like there’s so much to tell you about this lovely door project. Firstly, I wanted to save this antique 100+ year old door, but it was NOT energy efficient. So, that started my adventure with trying to insulate it further with different options. Step 1 was replace the glass with an argon glass filled panel, but here’s the thing, I’m not really good at just doing straight forward projects. I want to make them into art pieces to make my building artistic and creative. But to get the door to have a forced closed spring, we need to to put a commercial closer on this. 😜 Suprise surprise, we needed to increase the head space to mount the closer. Soo, that meant the Luxfor tiles had to come down (don’t worry, we’re saving those and have a plan, but it will take a bit to get them to where we use them). Now the new window allows for headspace to mount the necessary equipment, but believe me, it was killing me inside to see that happen. However, the plan is to use that tiny test piece for something fantastic someday if we can get the right person the back the project 🤩 Now the next quandary: we had to offset the window by 1/4 inch so it’s not completely centered due to not wanting to run the risk of having 1/8th inch plywood o the sides and not have a stable mountable surface for additional needs in the future. Which means the window is sliiightly off center. So do we flash it with copper to match be store front and let it patina over time or do we flash it on black to let it blend it or the background and keep your eye from catching the centering issue? Let us know what you think!
P.S. sorry Zach for the video angle of you. You’re the best and I appreciate you so much!!
