Eggnog: A tradition of taste.
If you hear or see the word egg you probably will have images of an egg frying in a pan, or think of breakfast. However, if you hear or see the word Eggnog it will automatically bring to mind Christmas. You might even find yourself transported back to childhood and Christmas' past. But where did this most sought after seasonal drink originate from and when? It is hard to pinpoint an exact date but it can be traced back as early as 13th century England, and was called Posset which is a hot milk drink brewed with either Ale, or wine with spices added. The use of the word Eggnog wasn't used until the 18th century in America. A glass of this yuletide gold would probably be amazing to enjoy in Colonial Williamsburg. As a child I remember vividly heading to a local grocery store to get our preferred brand of eggnog. That grocery store has long since closed but my memories of those times remain and are indeed very special. Traditionally, eggnog is garnished with a warming dash of nutmeg and cinnamon. I am a fan of tradition and each year I look forward to spotting those first quarts of eggnog hitting the shelves in local stores. As a matter of fact I share an annual tradition with my Mom by drinking the first glass of eggnog each year with her. I won't drink the first delicious drop until it is with her and we both enjoy this simple but meaningful occasion. My Mom even insists that we interlock arms as we drink our first cup of the season. My Mom has benign essential tremors which has made this harder to manage but I am very thankful to still help steady her arm for that first sip. My two children also enjoy this frothy creamy treat each night from as early October through New Year's Eve. Even if you're not a fan of Eggnog, it still warms the heart at the mere mention of its name, and that speaks to its true value. Wishing each of you a Very Merry Christmas.
