Not all bookmail is created equally. As a bookseller, I receive these magical objects consistently, and more frequently than some would prefer. And while every package outside my door offers a reprieve from the daily grind, a promise of at least one deep hit of dopamine and the potential for enduring pleasures, only a select few of these visitors bring with them a sense of felicity that actually lingers for weeks.

Today was an especially great day for bookmail, with two new arrivals from writers important to the Edgewood concern yet at the opposite ends of their careers: one saying hello, the other whispering goodbye.

If you like your fiction from the seedier side of town yet still value the subtle art of the American sentence, you probably know Josh Kendall’s work (Josh Kendall) even if you don’t know his name. He helped create the Mulholland Books imprint at Little, Brown, editing your favorite writer’s favorite crime writers for years. He basically ushered most of our Staff Picks to print.

But now his debut novel, I’M NOT HERE TO HUNT RABBITS (Putnam Books), in which a grieving security contractor must protect a crime family, has arrived. It’s a literary spy thriller with lots of heart, festering wounds, and a livewire voice guiding you through the backstreets of Ethiopia, perfect for fans of Greene, Le Carre, Stone, and Ambler. It’s at the top of my TBR pile, and it should be at the top of yours, too. Be sure to preorder it from your local bookshop.

Josh and I have discussed our mutual love for the protean work of James Sallis and his unyielding commitment to crafting crystalline sentences and elliptical stories that defy all genre formulas and conventions. And now Sallis’ melancholy swan song, BACKWATER, is in bookshops. It’s going to hurt to read this one, but I’m also thrilled to have his last work in hand. The author of DRIVE and the creator of the Lew Griffin series died earlier this year.

These two make up my next double feature.
