Nearly every foot of King William Coffee House has someone using it at all times. Conversation, homework, community meetings, coffee, and yes, reading too. The only unused space was a store room adjacent to their roasting room. After months of thoughtful conversation, focused curation, and a week of sweat and deep hospitality from their team, that roasting room is now The Study - a literary room curated by Household Books.

The curation extends in concentric circles from King William Coffee House’s origins, and the taste and experiences of the ownership team, to the historic neighborhood, San Antonio, Texas, European Salon culture, and more, and it will continue to evolve and grow. There are rare volumes and reading copies, art imprints and vintage tourism items, and, of course, plenty of Larry McMurtry, all selected with the intention of sparking curiosity and maybe some good conversation.

Huge thanks to the Southtown neighborhood that was so excited by the idea of a mini bookshop, and to Mark, Mike, and the team, these deep reading dreamers were as welcoming as a crew can be and will care for and steward the space.

Events, new uses, forthcoming rare and used book drops, will all follow, but for now we’re really grateful to have folks in San Antonio come enjoy something imagined, and then made real. A new torch, fashioned in Texan style, to carry shared fire.

Saturday was a special one. Household was some sort of cosmic crossroad and we had the pleasure of hosting Ethan and Francis Azarian, whose gorgeous hauntings a folk prophecy will long linger in the space. Matthew Shelton put and incredible show together and Greg McMahan and Mark Minelli added tenderness, cleverness, and a bit of hard earned tears in your beers wisdom to the occasion as well. Our type of holy. Thanks everyone.

In each of the bookish spaces we’ve been so lucky to design, our Black Voices/Black Culture section exists near the door, so folks don’t have to look too far to see themselves, each other, or the cumulative effects of acknowledging our shared humanity. It’s a small thing, but it’s cool to see it work, and this focus allows for constant learning. Happy Juneteenth, folks, keep on being in awe of each other, it does wonders.
