Hard to pick.

I’m reeling a bit. We had quite the whirlwind of a weekend. A film crew followed Jakob around for three days. A documentary is being made.

It will be one of six short documentaries in a series called, “Talk is Cheap: nonspeakers’ anthology,” produced by James Rutenbeck, an Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker.

So yeah…cool stuff.

Even cooler…Jakob is co-directing.

And he has plenty of ideas about how he wants this film to go. One thing he was insistent on was that it included his girlfriend, Jasmine, and his best friend, Andrew.

Here they are walking together downtown Saturday night on their way to eat and then to a concert.

As I’m trying to pick out what stories to tell, I think this picture is a really sweet way to start.💙

Then of course, we have new merch and books and all the things.

And it begins…

Jakob is starring in and co-directing a documentary about his life with Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker, James Rutenbeck.

It sounds like a big deal because well, it is.

We’ll be filming all weekend at various locations. Jakob is beyond pumped.

He’s bringing some friends along for the ride. His girlfriend, Jasmine. His best friend, Andrew. An old friend, Marcel and his girlfriend, Maddie who will be joining him and Jasmine on a double date. And at least four of his communication partners alongside other spellers in our community will be there too.

It’s really going to be something to see.

If you want to be a part of this adventure, you can come see us Sunday, at The Collective Boutiques from 12-3. It’s a book signing and spelling event and a part of this documentary.

We’d love to see you!💙

Whew. I’m off the hook for a fancy present.😉

And I totally agree. I couldn’t wish for anything better.

Julie Sando from Autistically Inclined is here through the weekend, so we’re gathering one more time with her, and communication partners from26 letters, endless possibilities and Kid Power Therapy Services, and other spellers this Sunday at our store in The Collective Boutiques from 12-3.

Come meet Jakob, talk to the CP’s, see and feel what this whole spelling thing is about.

Parents, bring your non-, minimal, and unreliable speakers so we can show them what they are capable of too.

Plus…there’s a documentary being made about Jakob and they’ll be filming the event. And that’s just a darn cool thing to see and be a part of.

So it’s Sunday from 12-3 at The Collective Boutiques in Harper’s Station.

We can’t wait to meet you!!!

Twenty five years ago today.

I had no idea what I was doing. I was exhausted and anxious. And really afraid that I was gonna mess it all up.

I didn’t know what to expect as a mom. I imagine that worked in my favor having a baby who would eventually receive autism and apraxia diagnosis’.

I didn’t measure what was, against what I thought should be.

That’s not to say I didn’t know that something was different. I did. It scared me. But there was very little of the “why me” and “why my child” thinking.

I was more in the camp of why not me? Why not him? Why not us?

Why would we not embrace this life we were given? Why not change these perceived challenges into opportunities for grand adventures?

Why not see it as an invitation to learn and grow and beat the odds?

Why not?

I couldn’t come up with a good answer for that one, so learning and growing is what I’ve tried to do.

In the beginning, it wasn’t an easy task. It took a long time for me to get my footing, which I still lose on occasion, and I can struggle to get it back.

But I keep going.

Because I know what it feels like when the grand adventures are in full swing.

Communication breakthroughs and starring in an opera and long stays in New York and Omaha and trips to London and Vegas and owning a business. Now a documentary that he’ll be co-directing.

And so much more.

What a delight it has been to bear witness to so many accomplishments.

What an honor to be called Mom by such an extraordinary human, who’s constantly surprising and impressing all of us, with his humor, wit, and wisdom.

What a joy this life has become.

Thank you, Jakob for 25 years of unpredictably, silliness, persistent pokes to stay grounded and present, and a love I never would have guessed possible.

You are my greatest teacher and my best friend.

Love you big big big big big.

Happy Birthday, Buddy.💙

Let’s do it again.

It’s a book signing, a meet n greet, a spelling event, and so much more.

It’s a community of people who really get it. Autism. Apraxia. The brain body disconnect. Unreliable speech.

Presuming competence.

It’s a place to come where everyone knows they belong.

It’s the last weekend Julie Sando from Autistically Inclined will be in town so we’ll be gathering again this Sunday from 12-3 at The Collective Boutiques.

Let’s hang out, talk about all the things, share stories, and find answers. Learn about what so many families here in Cincinnati are experiencing. The incredible communication breakthroughs they’re having.

How your non-speaker can have one too.

It’s worth your time.

We promise.💙

One at a time.

In three days’ time, Julie Sando from Autistically Inclined sat down with sixteen spellers.

SIXTEEN.

Some have spelled before. Some have not. Many of them are there because they saw what Jakob can do.

This is Salah.

He is an unreliable speaker who we’ve known for years. I used to drive him home from school every day. He’d sit in the front seat, hold my hand, and rattle off loops about Disney movies and cartoon characters at record speed.

I’d always believed there was so much more to him than what we could see. I knew he was brilliant.

He used to spell words to me, but he’d do it in numbers. He would say “1” for “A”, “2” for “B” and so on. I’d have to figure it out. For instance, “Apple” would be “1, 16, 16, 12, 5.”

It blew my mind how quickly he could do it.

I have thought about Salah every day since Jakob had his communication breakthrough, hoping that someday, he’d be sitting by Julie.

Yesterday was that day.💙
