When I had the quilt appraised, it needed a name. I called it “The Complete Charley Harper” because all of the fabrics excluding the black sashing and binding are fabrics from the Charley Harper Collection. Even the backing is a taupe colored End Papers design.
The quilt will be sold a week from today at Flavor of Findlay.
My goal was to show as much Harper artwork as possible within a traditional quilting medium showcasing Charley’s style. The Blocks are Evening Star which are a variation of Ohio Star.
It will be difficult to give this one up.

Block 25 is untitled. The acrylic on canvas was done in 1984 and named by a Chicago auction house as “Jack-O-Lantern and Raccoons”. The estimate was $3000-$5000.
It sold for $12,600.

Block 24 is Cow with Cowbirds.
The image was originally from Ford Times. Again another piece of Harper art that I was totally unaware of until the quilt.
Colors blended very easily with this one and I see a mixture of realism and symmetry converging in Charley’s style. But that’s just my interpretation and I’m not an artist.
It’s all in the eye of the beholder, right?

Block 23 is Birch Bark and Birds.
I was totally unfamiliar with this artwork until I started this quilt. I find it fascinating that my perception of this print is probably totally different from anyone else’s. I see a high rise apartment building for birds against a nighttime background(dark blue).

Block 22 is Cardinal and Chickadee. The chickadee is iconic Harper and this illustration of the cardinal is distinctly different from other prints. It had to be represented in this quilt with the pairing of these 2 together.
(FYI this cardinal is close to some of the posters, but does not include the tail.)

Block 21 is simply named Scarecrow.
This block has become a favorite for me as I see a bit more realism in Charley’s work combined with the mid century style. Matching colors with the End Papers fabric was at first difficult until I realized the stripes on the scarecrow’s shirt are a dark blue.

Block 20 is Upside Downside and a favorite, and an early fabric from the Harper organization.
What I see in this print is piano keys, specifically two black keys.
