A good friend of mine, David Rosenberg of Wooden shoe gardens shared this to me at our annual pig roast over the weekend.

With the blessing of this absolutely beautiful fall weather it really brought home that "down home" spirit of harvest time for me when I opened the envelope Dave handed me at the party and read it Sunday morning.

Visuals of farm families performing the tasks so colorfully described in rural dialect flashed across the screen of mind as I felt the kinship with those agricultural ancestors warming my heart. 💗

For those that may not know the history or use of the "fodder shock" it's a pretty darn effective nature based food storage system used in the days before "factory" farming took over the harvest.

As the family moved across the field they would cut the corn stalks and tie them into bundles packing things like winter squash in with the corn layer by layer leaving a trail of the bundles, "shocks" spaced every couple hundred feet or so across the field as they went.

When winter came they'd take a wagon or sled pulled by the plowhorse or ox out to the field and pull them back to the house and barn with the food for the family going into the house and everything else going to the barn to feed the livestock.

This poem just kind of really captured the soul of those simpler times before the beeping of ringtones that rule people's lives today.

Those times when our ancestors lived by the rhythm of the sun and the seasons.

Not so different from my kid days here in the truck farming gardens of Wooden shoe hollow. 🌿

Fresh load of budget friendly coarse gravel!

$2 for a five gallon bucket (bring one)
$25 for a loader scoop, aprox. 22 cu ft

This is retired roof gravel and has some dust in it.
Great for all kinds of garden projects.
I've been using it for sinkholes and muddy spots. :) al

It’s getting to be that time of year to change things up in the garden … our fall veggies are stocked and ready for the planting! 🌿 The shop is open everyday 9am-2pm.

Seed harvesting time!

I never cease to marvel at Nature's sheer wisdom and ingenuity.
Tomatoes store so much water in the form of juice in the seed core that she puts a germination inhibitor on the seed coat to keep them from sprouting inside the fruit.

Only when the ripe fruit has fallen to the ground and starts to rot through natural fermentation do the seeds become viable to sprout.

She does something similar with a number of pepper species that require a bird's digestive tract to remove the sprouting inhibitor.
I'll save that "workaround" for a future post. 🌶

As gardeners when harvesting tomato seeds we can insure maximum viability from our saved seeds by mimicking Nature's handiwork in a controlled fashion by fermenting them in jars with a breathable lid.

The viable seeds will sink and the non viable seeds will float.

After five or six days we just pour off the flotsam and rinse the seeds with clear water and put them on a screen to dry for seed bank storage.

If you've ever wanted to save your heirloom tomatoes from one year to the next that's how you do it!

Of course if you've got other things more fun or important to do than fuss with tomato seeds you can count on us to have seeds and plants for you in the spring!
