For our final "Guess that Seed," we bring you a fan favorite! Can you guess the wildflower that produces this seed?

Hint: This cheerful white and yellow wildflower often requires a healthy fall rain (fingers crossed this might be a good year), acts as a bullseye for flying insects to locate pollen, and its species name is Greek for "wide, flat tongue."

We're back with part 2 of "Guess that seed!" This lovely wildflower will also be available for purchase at this year's Fall Sale on October 10th & 11th. Want a hint? It has flowers that are a true blue color, grows throughout a wide range from Alaska down to parts of Mexico, blooms later than most wildflowers, and is named in part after the Lewis & Clark expedition.

As we get closer to our Fall Sale on Saturday, October 10th & 11th, we will be showcasing many of the seed varieties available for purchase! Each with a unique shape and structure. Test your skills - can you guess the plant that these seeds came from? Want a hint? This little wildflower grows in hillsides and shady areas, often carpeting the ground. It is an edible wildflower, and was supposedly used to help prevent scurvy due to its high vitamin C content.

Last week we focused on a bright seasonal spring display, but what about those summer hues? This landscape vignette features a perennial pathway border with some spring and summer-flowering shrubs such as Monkeyflower, Salvias, and Woolly Bluecurls!

Also, don't forget your grasses! Purple Three-Awn, or Aristida purpurea, not only adds color, it provides texture and visual appeal throughout the summer and fall when other perennials have stopped flowering.

Ready to refresh your landscape for a spring show? This plant vignette is a great example of how to layer color, texture, and wildlife value for a lively seasonal display.

Western redbuds offer a standout bloom each year in climates with cooler winter temperatures. Golden Abundance Oregon grape supports birds and adds eye-catching yellow flowers for extra pop. For smaller spaces, blue-eyed grass and California poppies are bright, cheerful, and perfectly sized for compact gardens.

Drawn to beautiful woodland scenes?

Next up on our California native plant garden inspiration series is this vignette from the California Botanic Garden's Riparian bed! This setting highlights plants that thrive in regions with intermittent periods of high moisture, as well as those challenging seasonally shaded areas in the garden.

Combining a primary canopy layer, with layered shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers enhances the view and provides multiple layers of cover and foraging for our backyard birds.

Thoughtful planting vignettes around a seating area can pack a punch! In addition, using a diversity of plants, such as this portion of our Bird & Butterfly Garden at California Botanic Garden, helps bring in a diversity of native pollinators, birds, and other important critters.

Collecting seeds is truly the gift that keeps on giving. It’s fun and satisfying, and it gives you seeds from plants that have already proven they thrive in your specific conditions. Seed saving is also a virtually free way to grow more plants—and if you don’t need them all, they make a wonderful gift for friends and family.

Summer dormancy is an ideal time to collect seeds, and any you don’t use can be left for local birds to enjoy from the seed heads!
