Kirk has loved rocks & minerals since he was a child. His wife, Janel, also shares a passion for stones and jewelry making. Since there are very few rock shops in Iowa, we decided to follow our passion and offer the opportunity for you to come to a rock shop and experience specimens from around the world and purchase for your own collection, display, and metaphysical needs. Those that self collect

rocks & minerals are frequently referred to as rock hounds. We have owned six basset hounds since we have been married and came up with the name Hound Dog Rock Shop. We want people of all ages to be excited in what Mother nature has created. The amazing thing is that no two stones are alike. These are NOT landscaping stones or gravel you place in a driveway. On our recent buying trip, Janel was with a vendor selecting gemstone/sterling silver rings, and yes, purchased a lot!

While she was doing that, I was selecting Tungsten rings that range in size 7 thru 16 (for big fingers like mine or wearing as thumb rings). I purchased a lot of them also, lol.

Tungsten is one of the hardest metals on earth. Online, you will see many from $150 to $300.

Yes, that's a Tungsten ring on my left hand in the photos. I wear one on each thumb daily.

UPDATE!

We were originally going to open at noon today but with the severe weather risk INCREASED to a 4 out of 5 level and the risk throughout the entire day, we have decided to CLOSE TODAY.

Hound Dog Rock Shop will be CLOSED TODAY due to the forecasted, severe weather approaching later this morning and all afternoon that could include 70 mph+ winds, large hail, heavy rain, and potential tornadic activity.

Hound Dog Rock Shop has large, 6 feet wide windows and NO basement. We want our customers and us to be safe!

We have so much NEW inventory coming to you ... always hand selected by us in person.

We sell a lot of amazing minerals from Madagascar. However, in the past 18 months or so, the good quality material is harder to locate.

For example, one of our largest vendors for Madagascan material, we have not purchased ANYTHING from them in over a year.

We've shifted and found some other outlets but will not purchase crappy material.

With that being said, great quality Blue Apatite has become challenging to find, especially in spheres.

We "sniffed" some out for you ...
