George Saltern’s Of the Antient Lawes of Great Britaine (1605) was a curious and ambitious contribution to the ideological literature surrounding the proposed Anglo-Scottish Union under James I. Writing at a moment of acute constitutional sensitivity, Saltern seeks to allay entrenched anxieties that incorporation would erode the "ancient liberties" of either realm. His strategy-distinctive among Unionist writers-is to posit not divergence but deep continuity: an inherited body of "antient lawes" shared by both kingdoms, extending (with characteristic early-Stuart antiquarian licence) from a pre-Roman past into the present.

Dei Delitti e Delle Pene (1764) was the first systematic study of the principles of crime and punishment. Infused with the spirit of the Enlightenment, its advocacy of crime prevention and the abolition of torture and capital punishment marked a significant advance in criminological thought, which had changed little since the medieval era. It was especially influential among American thinkers, who saw Beccaria as a source of ideas to reform English common law. Our copy is among the earliest American printings of this work. Though the date of the true first edition has been debated, it is clear today that the first American edition was published in Charleston, SC, in 1777. What appeared to be earlier American imprints, including a 1773 New York imprint, have been ascertained to be ghosts.

One of the great social and political satirists of his day, Isaac Cruikshank was a pioneer in the history of comics and one of the first to use narrative sequences and speech balloons. (He was also the father of two notable satirists: Isaac Robert Cruikshank and George Cruikshank.) A Right Honorable, Alias a Sans Culotte (1792) is a scathing critique of British statesman Charles James Fox’s perceived duplicity regarding the French Revolution. On his left side, Fox is a ragged, fierce-looking French revolutionary (sans culotte). On his right side, he is an elegant, smiling British gentleman. His feet straddle a body of water representing the Straits of Dover, highlighting his attempt to bridge the gap between British loyalty and French radicalism.

The Summa Azonis is methodical exposition of Roman law. It circulated widely in manuscript and was first printed in 1481. It was a work of immense authority for generations of continental lawyers and was a source used by Bracton in his landmark treatise on English law.

The title page of this edition, printed in Venice by Melchior Sessa in 1596, has a title page featuring a version of the famous Sessa device: a cat with a mouse in his mouth. Our copy has an addition feline feature: a set of paw prints left by a shop cat who walked across an inked forme, then one of the sheets.
