The Summa Azonis is methodical exposition of Roman law. It circulated widely in manuscript and was first printed in 1481. It was a work of immense authority for generations of continental lawyers and was a source used by Bracton in his landmark treatise on English law.

The title page of this edition, printed in Venice by Melchior Sessa in 1596, has a title page featuring a version of the famous Sessa device: a cat with a mouse in his mouth. Our copy has an addition feline feature: a set of paw prints left by a shop cat who walked across an inked forme, then one of the sheets.

Hastily written, cheaply printed and sold on street corners or at ex*****ons throughout the nineteenth century, English crime and ex*****on broadsides are important examples of the development of modern print culture and provide interesting insights into social history. The 25 broadsides in this collection, which provide grisly accounts of murder, necrophilia, r**e, domestic abuse, infanticide and labor unrest, are the only known copies, with no others recorded on OCLC, Library Hub or in institutional collections such as those at Harvard or the British Library. All provide a unique picture of criminal justice in England from the days of the Bloody Code to the reforms of the Victorian era.

London’s Adelphi Theatre was famous for its nineteenth-century Shakespearean parodies, but not everyone was amused. In this rare, unrecorded c.1875 satirical mezzotint, the theatre is literally put on trial for "desecrating" the Bard.

Featuring women in witch’s hats presiding as judges (a Macbeth nod) and a jury of children's book characters, this print is a wonderfully bizarre piece of theatrical and legal satire.

With no copies located on OCLC, Library Hub, or at the Folger Shakespeare Library, this is a true rarity. It’s a major highlight of our new e-list, Images of Law & Government, 1689-1984.
