I read yesterday that Gloria Steinem’s birthday was March 25th and I thought back to 1983 when I joined a group of women, in the iconic Pasadena Bullocks Department Store, lined up to meet, purchase and have Ms. Steinem sign her latest book. After about an hour, I made it to Ms. Steinem. She was gracious and attractive and It was great to secure a signed copy of her book for my daughter, then 21.

We don’t have any of Ms. Steinem’s works at 603 ART and BOOKS right now. They seen to find homes quickly.

We do have works by some significant women writers including Hannah Arendt, Susan Sontag, E. Annie Proulx, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas and others.

And we have wonderful art by Ms.HWFarber including her “Career Choices in 1961”.

We look forward to your visits.

We appreciated the visits of Ms. Diane Keaton to our Prufrock Books store when we were in Pasadena from 1979 to 1999. And It was nice when she found a book or two there. I always thought, “Lucky books in that they get to live in her library” (You might say the same thing if you pull up the “Diane Keaton Library” on the internet).

And it was a treat to see Ms. Keaton early every 2nd Sunday of the month over those 20 years often maneuvering her “Radio Flyer Town and County” wagon around the 2,500 Rose Bowl Flea Market vendors. She seemed addicted, as I and hundreds of others, to jumping out of bed on those mornings, hustling over to the Rose Bowl, purchasing an early admission ticket (starting at 5:30 AM) and trying to get the jump on the 20,000 other Flea Market addicts that would show up on a typical 2nd Sunday.

And It was nice to exchange “hellos” with Ms. Keaton every 3rd Sunday in the late 1980s when I had a book booth with Caskey and Lee’s Collectables show in Burbank.
She was there almost every month.

So Here’s to Ms. Diane Keaton...Gracious & Talented Lady of the reel, real and book worlds.

THE BAKELITE COLLECTION by MATTHEW BURKHOLZ

In the 1990s, I signed up to have a book booth twice a year with the Caskey-Lees Modernism Shows in LA.

For the March, 1998 show I set up across from Matthew L. Burkholz, a Bakelite dealer, and thought…this should be fun. I didn’t realize how much fun until the doors opened Saturday morning and a wave of attractive women (including Suzanne Somers) adorned with wonderful Bakelite, began descending on Matthew’s booth. It seemed like a love fest across the aisle.

(It wasn’t all bad in the book world as Ms. Somers and her husband, and a few others, stopped in and purchased a book or two.)

Later that day, I learned that the Bakelite ladies were celebrating the recent publication of Matthew’s book, THE BAKELITE COLLECTION. A number of the ladies and their collections were featured in his book.

At the end of the show, I purchased a copy and Matthew was kind enough to inscribe the book. I told him, if he ever needed an assistant to please give me a call. It’s been 27 years and 3 time zones ago and no call so it might be time to find a new home for his widely appreciated Bakelite book.

It’s a First Edition (1997) with like new dust jacket and book, 242 pages, over 750 color photographs and the author’s inscription to somebody named “Robert”.

It’s priced at $60 and with our current 20% off BOOK SALE $48.
