🌧️🌲 A Selenite Forest on a Rainy Day 🌲🌧️

I turned off the lights today and caught this photo of my selenite towers arranged like a little forest… and honestly, they look downright ominous. 👻

There’s something about selenite that makes it especially eerie in low light. Selenite is a variety of gypsum, and when it’s polished into towers, it can be translucent and have a glass-like appearance. Instead of simply reflecting light, the crystals can allow light to pass through and scatter along their edges and internal structures.

Add a dark room, a gloomy rainy day, and all those tall crystal towers standing together… and suddenly my peaceful little crystal forest looks like something straight out of a haunted woodland. 🌫️🌲

It’s funny how much lighting and atmosphere can change the way we perceive something. In bright light, these look serene and beautiful. In the dark? Apparently, they’re waiting for something to emerge from the fog. 😂👻

Ever wondered where the name “Miner’s Dollar” came from?

The name comes from the coal miners who discovered these unusual pyrite formations. During the 1800s and 1900s, miners working deep underground would occasionally come across flat, golden discs embedded between thin layers of coal and shale.

To the miners, they looked remarkably like gold coins buried inside the rock. They began calling them “dollars” and, according to stories passed down from mining communities, miners would sometimes sneak these little treasures out in their lunchboxes rather than let them be crushed along with the surrounding rock

Miner’s Dollar Pyrite is particularly well known from coal deposits in Illinois, especially around Sparta, Illinois, where spectacular pyrite formations have been collected. They formed within the layers of sedimentary rock associated with ancient coal deposits.
