Here is Matt carefully scoring the nut of a Fender Strat to prepare for its removal. Are you open strings buzzing, twanging or losing tone and sustain? The suspect is likely the nut slots being too low. A poorly cut nut can also cause problems while tuning (ever heard that ZING when tuning up one of the wound strings?).

At Hank’s, we do nut shims for those trying to save a little bit of money ($49.99) to get your slots back to a good height, and rounding out the back edge of the slots for proper tuning. **Your guitar won’t stay in tune — so you need locking tuners, right?**

Maybe.

But before you spend the money, there’s something you should know:

With a typical 6mm tuner post, **three full wraps account for only about 7% of the total string length.**

So are those wraps really the big problem?

Often, **the nut is**.

A sharp, poorly cut nut slot can grab the string, trap tension, and cause the guitar to return sharp or flat after bends or tremolo use.

Locking systems can absolutely help — but sometimes they’re solving a problem that a properly cut nut would have prevented in the first place.
