Giles’ Drag Sawing Machine was a 19th-century manually operated device designed to make cutting large logs easier and more efficient. The seated operator powered the machine by pumping a foot treadle, which converted the motion into a back-and-forth movement of a large saw blade. This allowed one person to cut logs with much less effort than using a traditional two-man crosscut saw.

The machine represented a step toward mechanization in the forestry industry, helping bridge the gap between fully manual tools and later steam or gas-powered saws. It was especially useful for preparing firewood and lumber during a time when faster, more efficient labor-saving tools were in high demand.
