Autism and water often connect through sensory experience. For many, water can provide calm, regulation, comfort, and a sense of safety. Everyone experiences the world differently, and understanding those sensory needs helps create more supportive spaces🌊💚

Months of struggles and watching him hurt himself and others, I feel like our happy little boy is starting to come back 🩵

Some behaviors are communication.
Some reactions come from sensory overload, anxiety, or feeling misunderstood.
Choosing empathy first can change everything for a child on the spectrum ✨

I know I’ve been a little quiet on here lately. Life behind the scenes has been a lot.

We’ve been dealing with some pretty intense self-injurious behavior with Nash, so most of my time and energy has been focused on keeping him safe and getting him the support he needs. Some days are really hard, and some are better.

I also want people to know that autism isn’t always the cute, trending, perfectly packaged moments you see online. For many families it can include really challenging things like self-injury, constant supervision, therapies, and a lot of advocating.

If you’re a parent going through something similar, you’re not alone. We’re all just doing the best we can for our kids, one day at a time. Thanks for being here and giving us a little grace while we navigate this season. 🤍

Santa pictures - Autism edition 😅🥴🎄
Things started out great until Nash spotted something he wanted to open. Triggering the meltdown of all meltdowns. Laying on the floor, kicking, screaming, and hitting. We continued and tried to make the best out of the situation.
Thankfully, the workers were absolutely incredible and so patient. Even having us take several pictures in an attempt to get one with him calm. (Even though that did not happen. lol)
Autism is unpredictable and sometimes extremely stressful. But we will keep trying, even when things are hard.🩵🎄

New addition to the basement is a fav 🫧

Bubble tubes can be really helpful for children with autism because they’re calming and easy to focus on. The soft lights and slow bubbles help them relax, stay regulated, and ease anxiety. They also grab attention in a gentle way, which can help with focus or communication—like asking for a color change or “more bubbles.”

Overall, they make a nice, soothing sensory spot when things feel overwhelming

For a nonverbal autistic child, a hospital isn’t just a place to heal — it’s a sensory storm. Bright lights, new faces, unfamiliar sounds… and he can’t explain how it feels. But he showed so much courage. I hope more people take the time to understand kids like him. 💙

Autism isn’t caused by something you did or didn’t do.
It’s not your fault. It never was. 💙
