About time, Coast Guard!

The U.S. Coast Guard just announced the purchase of FOUR MQ-9B Reaper-family drones, an investment in long-range surveillance capabilities.

And our first thought? What took so long?!

Think about the Coast Guard’s mission. Thousands of miles of coastline, vast stretches of open ocean, drug interdictions, search and rescue, illegal fishing, and maritime security.

Having eyes in the sky that can stay airborne for more than 30 hours is a game changer.

The Coast Guard has been doing more with less for decades. It’s exciting to see technology finally catching up with the mission.

Small Force. Big Impact. Now with a much bigger view.

This is the kind of story that hits hard: a 100-year-old, for-us-by-us lifeline quietly helping Coast Guard families survive financial crises. The wild part? Most people only find it through word of mouth—meaning too many struggle before they ever hear help exists.

NEW EPISODE is live!

Did you know? Last year, CGMA delivered $12 Million dollars in direct support to 4,000 clients. That's about $33,000 dollars each day in support, and CGMA is on track to reach similar numbers this year. Of that $12 million, $3 million went to clients as grants, which equaled the $3 million in donations (and sponsorships!) CGMA received last year. It was a 1 for 1 match, and they intend to do the same this year.

Crossing the Atlantic under sail at 16 knots sounds like an adventure. Making it happen takes trust, grit, and a crew that works together.

In this clip from our upcoming Puddle Pirate Podcast episode, CGMA’s CEO and retired Coast Guard Commander, Brooke Millard, shares a story with lessons that reach well beyond the deck.

We also talk about Coast Guard Mutual Assistance’s mission and how it helps shipmates and their families when they need support.

🎙️ Watch the clip, and stay tuned for the full episode. Shipmates helping shipmates. That’s a story worth telling.

No road in. Coast Guard by air.

When an injured rafter needed help along a remote stretch of Oregon’s Rogue River on October 1, an Air Station North Bend crew answered the call.

With no road access, the MH-65 Dolphin aircrew hoisted the rafter from the riverbank. Another reminder that Coast Guard life-saving missions reach well beyond the coastline.

The rafting group had also packed something that proved essential: a satellite communications device. When you’re heading somewhere remote, a way to call for help belongs right alongside your first-aid kit and trip plan.

Sometimes the best Puddle Pirate design ideas start with a trip down the Coast Guard history rabbit hole.

In April 1851, a violent storm battered Minot’s Ledge Light off the Massachusetts coast. The lighthouse had only been operating since 1850, but from the beginning, its iron structure had struggled against the force of the sea.

As the storm intensified, two assistant keepers were trapped at the light. They kept the lamps burning and the bell ringing as the structure began to fail.

In the early morning hours, the lighthouse finally collapsed into the sea. Neither keeper survived.

That story became part of the inspiration for this year’s Puddle Pirate Halloween design.

Because when you read stories about keepers standing watch alone in isolated lighthouses, surrounded by darkness, storms and an unforgiving sea, it doesn’t take much imagination to make things a little spooky.

And it got us thinking…

What if the lighthouse disappeared, but the keeper never left?
