THE HALLOWEEN COLLECTION IS LIVE

Some watches end when the relief arrives.

Others never end at all…

Meet Keeper of the Light, our newest Halloween design inspired by the lonely lighthouse watches of maritime history.

Through the storm, the light still burns. A shadow still moves inside the tower. And somewhere beyond the beam, a ship appears through the darkness… even when no ship should be there.

KEEPER OF THE LIGHT
Some Watches Never End.

The new design is available NOW alongside the rest of our Puddle Pirate Halloween Collection.

Stay salty. Stay spooky. Semper Paratus.

Some Coast Guard cutters have stories that deserve to be remembered.

USCGC Mojave (WPG-47) was one of them.

Commissioned in 1921, the 240-foot cutter spent more than 25 years taking on just about every mission the Coast Guard could throw at her.

She patrolled the Bering Sea.
Chased rumrunners during Prohibition.
Conducted International Ice Patrols.
Spent weeks at sea gathering weather observations in the Atlantic.

Then came World War II.

Mojave was assigned to the Greenland Patrol, operating in some of the most unforgiving waters of the war while escorting convoys and hunting for submarines.

In August 1942, while escorting Convoy SG-6, the Army transport USAT Chatham was torpedoed by a German U-boat near the Strait of Belle Isle.

Mojave responded.

Her crew helped rescue 570 men from the sinking transport.

It was exactly the kind of mission these cutters were built for: part warship, part rescue platform, and always ready for whatever came next.

Mojave survived the war, earned a World War II battle star, and was finally decommissioned in 1947.

From rumrunners to ice patrols to the Battle of the Atlantic, she packed a lot of Coast Guard history into one hull.

If you’ve sailed, you might know this one.

The pig and hen is one of the oldest pieces of sailor lore, traditionally tattooed on sailors as a symbol of protection from shipwreck and drowning.

The story goes back to the days when pigs and chickens were transported aboard ships in wooden crates. After a wreck, those crates could float, giving the animals a better chance of surviving and reaching shore.

Over time, the pig and hen became symbols of good luck and safe passage at sea.

Sometimes you go looking through Coast Guard history and stumble across an interesting story many of us haven't heard before.

This week in 1945, the Coast Guard Cutter Magnolia (WAGL-231) was approaching Mobile Bay when a 8,000-ton cargo ship Marguerite Le Hand collided with her.

The impact tore into Magnolia's port side. When the cargo ship backed away, the Gulf rushed in. Unfortunately, one of the crew was lost but 49 did survived.

But her story had already stretched across more than four decades.

Built in 1904 for the U.S. Lighthouse Service, Magnolia spent her career doing the kind of work that rarely makes headlines: maintaining buoys, lighthouses and the aids to navigation mariners depended on. When the Lighthouse Service became part of the Coast Guard in 1939, Magnolia came with it.

She served until the final days of World War II.

236 Years of Coast Guard History: Day 4

Most people know the Coast Guard for search and rescue.

But that's only one piece of the mission.

The Coast Guard is responsible for 11 statutory missions:

âš“ Search and Rescue
âš“ Marine Safety
âš“ Aids to Navigation
âš“ Living Marine Resources
âš“ Marine Environmental Protection
âš“ Ice Operations
âš“ Ports, Waterways, and Coastal Security
âš“ Drug Interdiction
âš“ Migrant Interdiction
âš“ Defense Readiness
âš“ Other Law Enforcement

From maintaining buoys to breaking ice, stopping drug smugglers to rescuing mariners, protecting fisheries to defending our nation's ports, there isn't another service quite like it.

One service. Eleven missions. Countless ways to serve.

🇺🇸 One day until Coast Guard Day.
