We just put out our Tennessee Coneflowers available for sale. They love this heat, and this is a great time to plant a piece of Tennessee's biological heritage.

,Echinacea tennesseensis is found naturally nowhere else in the world but Tennessee, where it evolved in the unique, harsh conditions of the Central Basin’s cedar glades. Once federally listed as an endangered species, this remarkable native has made a significant recovery and was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2011.

Tennessee coneflower is a beautiful, long-lived perennial growing approximately 1–2 feet tall, with rose-purple flowers held above narrow, upright foliage. Unlike many coneflowers, its petals tend to angle upward around the distinctive central cone, giving the plant a unique appearance. It blooms through the summer and attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seed heads provide food for birds later in the season.

In the wild, Tennessee coneflower grows in full sun and extremely dry, rocky, shallow soils characteristic of cedar glades. In the home landscape, it is an excellent choice for sunny, well-drained areas, rock gardens, xeriscaping, and other locations where many plants struggle. It is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and prefers leaner soils rather than heavily fertilized garden beds.

Planting Tennessee coneflower is more than adding another beautiful purple flower to your garden. It is a chance to grow a piece of Tennessee's botanical heritage and help preserve a species that has an incredible conservation story.

Taxodium distichum, commonly known as bald cypress, is a majestic native conifer prized for its soft, feathery foliage and impressive year-round interest. Despite being a conifer, it is deciduous, turning brilliant shades of cinnamon-orange and russet in fall before shedding its needles for the winter. Young trees have a graceful pyramidal form that matures into a broad, stately canopy. In most home landscapes, bald cypress typically reaches 50–70 feet tall with a spread of 25–35 feet. It is an excellent shade tree with a commanding yet elegant presence.

Bald cypress thrives in full sun and is remarkably adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. While it is naturally found in swamps, floodplains, streambanks, and seasonally flooded forests throughout the southeastern United States, it performs equally well in average, well-drained garden soils once established. Its extensive root system makes it exceptionally tolerant of drought, flooding, urban conditions, and poor soils, making it one of the most versatile and low-maintenance native trees available. Contrary to popular belief, the characteristic "knees" generally develop only when the tree is grown in saturated or flooded soils.

Beyond its ornamental beauty, bald cypress is an ecological powerhouse. It provides nesting sites and shelter for birds, supports numerous native insects, and its seeds are eaten by ducks, wild turkeys, and other wildlife. Its soft texture, outstanding fall color, and remarkable adaptability make it an exceptional specimen tree, shade tree, or part of a rain garden.

Looking for the perfect native phlox? We have three unique selections in stock, each suited to a different part of the landscape while providing outstanding beauty and pollinator value.

'Robert Poore' garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) is a tall, mildew-resistant selection that reaches 4–5 feet and produces large clusters of bright pink-purple flowers through the heat of summer. Naturally, Phlox paniculata is found along streambanks, moist meadows, woodland edges, and open floodplain forests. It thrives in full sun to part shade with average to moist soils and is a favorite of butterflies, hummingbirds, and native bees.

'Jeana' garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) offers the same graceful height at 4–5 feet, but is famous for its smaller lavender-pink flower clusters that are considered one of the best butterfly-attracting perennials available. Like the species, it prefers full sun to part shade and average to moist, well-drained soils, making it an exceptional choice for sunny borders of pollinator gardens.

'Sherwood Purple' woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) is perfect for those shadier garden spaces. Growing just 12–18 inches tall, it forms a carpet of fragrant lavender-blue flowers in spring that attract early-season bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. It thrives in part shade to full shade with rich, moist, well-drained soils and is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, or along shaded pathways.

Whether you need a bold summer centerpiece for a sunny border or a carpet of spring color beneath the trees, we have a phlox for your landscape! 🌸🦋

There’s an incredible fragrance wafting through the nursery right now, and if you’ve visited recently, you’ve probably noticed it before you even saw the plant. Our summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) is in full bloom, filling the air with a rich, sweet fragrance often compared to honey, vanilla, and spicy cloves.

Clethra alnifolia, commonly known as summersweet, is a deciduous native shrub covered in upright spikes of fragrant white flowers during mid to late summer, a time when many other shrubs have finished blooming. Growing 3–8 feet tall, depending on the cultivar, it provides a spectacular floral display while attracting an abundance of bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. Its blooms are among the most valuable nectar sources available during the heat of summer, making it a true pollinator magnet. We have three selections available: the straight species with classic white blooms, 'Ruby Spice' with fragrant pink flower spikes, and the compact 'Hummingbird', perfect for smaller landscapes.

Summersweet thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils, though it is surprisingly adaptable once established. In the wild, it is commonly found along streambanks, wet woodlands, pond margins, and coastal plain habitats. In the home landscape, it is equally at home in rain gardens, woodland borders, foundation plantings, or as part of a mixed native shrub border. It is a low-maintenance shrub that spreads slowly by suckers to form attractive colonies and requires little more than occasional pruning after flowering if shaping is desired.

Beyond its intoxicating fragrance and exceptional pollinator value, summersweet offers interest well beyond the flowering season. Its glossy green foliage turns a beautiful golden-yellow in fall, and its naturally rounded form provides structure throughout the growing season. If you're looking for a shrub that appeals to both people and pollinators, few natives can match the beauty, fragrance, and versatility of summersweet.

Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸

Just a reminder that Tennessee Naturescapes is closed today, July 4th, so our team can enjoy the holiday with family and friends.

Good news! Because this week was hotter than a firecracker, we're extending our 25% off nursery-wide sale through the end of the day on Saturday, July 11th. The extreme heat kept many folks from getting out to shop, so we wanted to give everyone a little extra time to take advantage of the savings.

We hope you have a safe and happy Independence Day, and we'll see you soon!

Our 25% OFF Summer Sale ends this Friday! If you've been thinking about adding more native plants to your landscape, now is the perfect time. We'll be closed on Saturday, July 4, so be sure to stop by before the sale ends.

One of the best things we can do for our native pollinators is increase plant diversity in our yards. The main takeaway of a recent two-year bumblebee study (linked below) found that there is not a single "best" pollinator plant. It found that landscapes with higher plant diversity attracted more native bumblebees.

It is worth noting that bee balm, goldenrod, and anise hyssop were the flowers bumblebees visited most often in the study. We are happy to say we have all three available at the nursery!

Whether you're starting a pollinator garden or simply adding a few new plants, our Summer Sale is a great opportunity to increase the biodiversity of your landscape while saving 25%. Every new native species you add helps create habitat for bumblebees, butterflies, and the countless other pollinators our ecosystems depend on.

We have two outstanding native pollinator magnets in stock that bring both beauty and wildlife value to the landscape: rose milkweed and bushy St. John's wort.

Rose/Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is a tall, elegant milkweed that produces fragrant clusters of pink to rose-purple flowers throughout the summer. Reaching 3-4 feet tall, it is a magnet for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. As a member of the milkweed family, it serves as a host plant for monarch butterflies, whose incredible cross-continental migration relies on successive generations finding milkweeds along the way. In the home landscape, its upright habit and long bloom period make it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, meadow plantings, and the middle to back of perennial borders where it provides height, color, and constant wildlife activity.

Bushy St. John's wort (Hypericum densiflorum) is a tough native shrub that puts -on a spectacular summer display. Growing 5-7 feet tall and wide, it becomes covered in masses of bright yellow flowers, often so densely that the foliage nearly disappears beneath the blooms. In the wild, it is commonly found in moist meadows, streambanks, wet openings, and woodland edges, but it adapts well to average garden conditions once established. Its fine-textured blue-green foliage, rounded form, and showy flowering display make it an outstanding landscape shrub. Bushy St. John's wort works beautifully as a specimen plant, in mixed shrub borders, along pond edges, or planted in groups where its brilliant yellow flowers can create a dramatic splash of color during the heat of summer.

Although both species are commonly found in wetter habitats in the wild, they are surprisingly adaptable in the garden. Rose milkweed and bushy St. John's wort perform well in average garden soils once established, making them excellent choices for gardeners looking to add pollinator value, seasonal color, and native beauty beyond rain gardens and wet areas
