Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, Asteraceae 🌻

An aromatic herbaceous perennial, yarrow has been long revered for the ability to stop 🛑 bleeding wounds. This plant is a antimicrobial and antiseptic. Famously known as the soldiers herb and used on Roman battelfields 🏹 yarrow has been listed as a panacea herb, meaning it has many other uses for other conditions.

How might I find this plant? 🌿
I’m glad you asked 😉 here are some identifying characteristics of yarrow, just remember do not eat something if you don’t know what it is! 🍃

While native to Europe, Asia, and North America this plant can’t be found all over the world growing in disturbed soil, open woodland/forest, roadsides, fields, and meadows. 🌾

🌱 Yarrow cracks from the seed and forms a basal rosette of soft, feathery, lanced shaped leaves.
🌱 Yarrows bipinattely compound leaves are 2-6 inches in length.
🌱 Yarrow shoots up fuzzy and grooved stalks about 1-3 feet high.
🌱 Yarrows leaves/stems appear alternately up the stalk.
🌱 Yarrow forms small flat clusters of whiteish, creamy, yellow, and sometimes pink flowers.
🌱 Yarrows blooms commonly have 5 ray florets and form thick corymbs varying from 10-30 heads.
🌱 Yarrow returns year after year from the rhizometous roots.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and remember to always do your own research and be 100% sure you know what a plant is before harvesting or foraging! Looking forward to chatting again soon, Happy Herb Hunting! 🌿

Good Morning Friends,

I want to share some pictures and a little tidbit about some of my favorite plants growing up on our little farm here. These two plants have been in my toolkit since I started working with herbs and this season I plan to raise them for seed.
First on the left we have,
Lamiaceae, Leonurus cardiaca, Motherwort/ Lions Heart
and second on the right we have,
Asteraceae, Achillea millefolium, Yarrow

Yarrow is an aromatic herbaceous perennial and historically has been used as a bitter and for its ability to aid in stopping bleeding. I personally use yarrow for its drying, styptic, antimicrobial, and astringent properties in a yarrow salve made from infusing leaves and flowers into oil.

Motherwort, the mother of herbs, is an herbaceous perennial known as a relaxing nervine, cardiovascular tonic, emmenagogue, and digestive bitter as well. I take motherwort by using the stem, leaves, and flowers infused in either alcohol or glycerite based tinctures, to help ease heart palpitations or anxiety, calm the heart and mind, stimulate the digestive system, and have used it during post- partum directly after giving birth to aide in expelling afterbirth and stimulate uterus contractions.

If you are new to herbs or a seasoned herbalist, you definitely want these ladies in your corner! Going forward I will post updates on these plant babies with more fun and educational information on their history and uses, growing our knowledge right alongside the growing plants!

Love, Jazmine Satterwhite
