You walked past the apple tree and didn't see me. I was six inches from your shoulder, stretched tall and thin against a dead stub with my eyes nearly closed.

You thought I was bark. That was the point.

I'm an eastern screech-owl. I've been living in the hollow knot of this tree for years. The stretch, the closed eyes, the motionless swaying — all of it is designed to make me disappear against the trunk during daylight 🌿

I'm the size of a pint glass. My feathers are patterned with the same tones and textures as the bark I'm pressed against. I close my eyes because the bright color gives me away. The ear tufts break up my silhouette so nothing round or owl-shaped registers to a passing hawk — or to you.

At night, I'm a different animal. I hunt the moths, beetles, and crickets drawn to porch lights, and the mice and voles that move through the garden after dark. My call isn't a hoot — it's a descending whinny or a soft trill. You've probably heard it and thought it was the wind.

🦉 If you see one:

- Keep walking — staring tells me my camouflage failed, and I'll burn energy relocating to a less exposed spot. The best thing you can do is pretend you didn't notice
- Don't prune dead wood or hollow branches. The cavity I'm sitting in is my nest, my roost, and the only reason I chose this tree over the one next door
- A screech-owl nest box with the right entrance size, mounted high on a tree trunk, attracts them to yards that don't have natural cavities

The owl you walked past without seeing has been there for years. The bark pattern, the closed eyes, and the stillness were all for your benefit — so you'd keep walking 🌱

I have a variety of spray roses for sale 30.00 plus tax per bouquet. I can wrap them or put them in a vase.
