It’s important to recognize our farmers and landowners that are doing exciting things on their farm and excelling in producing their commodity. This year’s Farm-City Farm Family of the Year is Shirah Farms of Blue Springs. It all started in the 1970's with Rupert Shirah farming peanuts, cattle, and hogs. In the 1990's he went to a predominantly cow/calf operation. 5 generations of Shirah’s have now farmed on the homesteaded land. Currently, Mr. Rupert still helps where he can with his son and grandson operations. Keith Shirah raised 2 children Logan and Kalei on the family farm. Logan’s and his wife Anna, currently live on the family farm with their 3 children Krislee, Kase and Kollyns. Kalei is married to Davey Faulk of Clio with 2 children, Alivia and Andy Jo.
Mr. Rupert and Mr. Keith are now witnessing their great grand and grandchildren learn to farm on the same land they have all their life. The 6th generation of Shirah’s currently put in many hours behind the play tractors in the same soil they have all their life.
In 2017, Keith and Logan started custom combining Bahia grass seed locally and in 2020 Shirah Seed Company was formally established, building and setting up all things for your seed needs, from planting, harvesting, cleaning, and marketing. Today, we now handle around 150 tons of Bahia seed a year. All while still harvesting, cleaning and bagging customers seeds such as oats, wheat, triticale, and corn. They still manage a commercial cattle herd and have 4 - 60x600 broiler houses with Wayne-Sanderson Farms, they stay quite busy year round.
