How to Turn One Dollar into Seven…

When a dollar is spent locally, it has a significant impact on the community as it circulates through various channels, benefiting different entities along the way.

1. Initial Purchase: Let’s say you spend a dollar at a local coffee shop to buy a cup of coffee. This is the starting point of the dollar’s journey within the community.

2. Income for Local Business: The coffee shop receives your dollar. They use a portion of it to cover expenses like rent, utilities, and wages for their employees.

3. Employee Wages: The coffee shop pays its employees, who then use their wages to buy groceries, pay rent, dine at local restaurants, or purchase goods and services within the community.

4. Supplier Payments: The coffee shop also pays its suppliers for coffee beans, milk, sugar, and other ingredients. These suppliers, in turn, may be local businesses themselves, and they use the income to sustain their operations and pay their employees.

5. Local Spending by Suppliers: The suppliers and their employees spend money locally, contributing to the circulation of the dollar within the community. They might shop at other local stores, eat at local eateries, or engage in recreational activities within the area.

6. Community Services: As businesses and individuals earn income from this circulation, they pay taxes to local governments. These taxes are used to fund public services such as schools, roads, parks, and emergency services.

7. Multiplier Effect: The cycle continues as the dollar is spent multiple times within the community, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth. Each time the dollar changes hands, it adds value to the local economy and strengthens community connections.

Basically, when you spend a dollar locally, you’re not just making a transaction, you’re contributing to a dynamic process that fuels economic activity, sustains livelihoods, and builds a more resilient and vibrant community.

Hey there, it's Cody 👋🏼
If I’ve helped you here at Sara’s Vac Shack, it’s been mostly from the back room, behind the scenes.

Believe it or not, I’ve actually worked in some capacity for Sara’s for since I was just 8 years old. Over the past 15 years, I've worn many hats - from handling shipping and refurbishing to managing repairs or most recently, warehouse manager.

And now I’ve now added the Showroom to my list of duties here.

Whether you're giving us a call or stopping by in person, I'm here and eager to assist you in any way I can.

For the past 5 years, Pamela Hubbard has organized Craft Shows at the Armory in Pine Tree Plaza.

One day, she noticed the building on the corner of 7th St. and Cloquet Avenue was available. Armed with her vast list of Artists and Creators, she decided to look into the space.

She took the big leap, contacted her vendors, and got enough people on board to open this past July 1, 2023. It was a fast and furious one-month setup for Pamela, a self-admitted “go-getter”.

Currently, there are 62 active vendors at Shop on the Corner. 95% of the items are handmade by local Artists!

The “Scandia Nook” has vintage Scandinavian offerings (4 hutches full!). The unique shop also carries vintage toys, Watkins, and a variety of vintage glassware and tools.

When asked about a notable interaction, she shared that one of the local families has a daughter from Florida who is a Bob Ross certified Instructor. She held a class and it was very popular! There are many class offerings. Stop in and talk with Pamela to get on the list.

As many small business owners can relate, Pamela tells folks, “This is my elephant, I can only do one bite at a time!”

That’s exactly what it feels like taking the leap into the world of business. What makes the teeth-clenching ride worth it is running with genuine, skilled team members and serving people who appreciate how small business carries local economy and community cohesiveness.

As Pamela points out, “When people shop here, they are supporting local Artists, local home businesses. And we appreciate the business so very much.”

Pamela, thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It's incredibly inspiring to hear about your journey, and we feel honored to be a part of our vibrant small business community alongside you.

🙋🏻‍♀️ Hi, I’m Syna! NEW Owner at Epic Nutrition here in Cloquet.
Having a shake shop is something I’ve always wanted to do. I went to college for Health, played soccer, and was on a wait list for radiology courses for SIX years, so decided to go a different route. For 4 years, I’ve been a certified personal trainer, health coach, and nutritionist. Within the last 2 years, I got my postpartum certification to help moms get their confidence back after having a baby.

In 2021, after we found out we were expecting, my husband, Chris, and I moved back to the area. He works for Duluth Law Enforcement and we decided I’d stay home with our son.

I had met the previous owner of the shake shop and she was hinting at closing down. I told her, “Don’t do anything until we talk! I’m buying this from you!”

🙌🏼 This location has been here for 10 years, and I’m proud to say we are in our 8th month of ownership. We’re still brand new, but with my background in health and an intentional lifestyle, we’re confident we have the energy and expertise to serve the community!

I’ve focused on getting the business wheels running for now, but in the future, I intend to bring in weight loss challenges to tie in my background with the business and help people reach their goals!

🤔 What’s the favorite item, you may ask?!?! Any of the shakes that involve peanut butter are definitely in demand! We just added the Loaded Teas, a 32 oz. mega tea with extra caffeine boost and aloe- the Jolly Rancher has been flying out the door!

People love that our shakes are:
-Only 200-250 calories
-5 grams of sugar or less
-We use real fruit in some shakes, so that may change things a bit, but adds benefit too.

We never want people to be intimidated to come on in. The great part is we are advisors into this whole world of quick, calculated nutrition. We will share what each ingredient does for you and help you get just what you’re looking for. No question is a bad question!

BONUS: We have a Salt Room!! If you’re not familiar, Halo Therapy is a 45 minute therapy session where you sit in the room and naturally breathe in salt particles that we push into the air. It helps open up your airways, detox and flush bacteria you may be holding, as well as skin benefits like anti-aging, anti-bacterial.

It’s great to be part of the local small business community here in Cloquet. When Jon stopped in to interview me for a business highlight, it showed me just how supportive this group is, and how important you all are to our success! Sara’s Vac Shack was once new in business too; to see that consistent service, believing in your products, and tenacity over time pays off is awesome.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your day and please, if you have any questions at all, I’m here for you!

PS: Jon here! I can attest the PB is delicious and I’m looking forward to trying the salt room in the near future as well. Syna really knows her stuff!

Home for the holidays—there's an enchanting magic to it. It's a time for reuniting with family and loved ones, celebrating something greater than ourselves. In my life, cherished memories are woven into moments spent in a snug home, surrounded by those we hold dear. This sentiment lies at the core of our dedication to homes, and tidy ones at that! 🙂

Witnessing the joy on the faces of couples and families as we carry their new vacuum out to their car is a source of immense fulfillment. We understand that vacuums may not be the most thrilling for everyone {we get that}, but to us, it's about the bigger picture. Assisting a busy mom in simplifying her cleaning routine, finding the perfect unit for an elderly couple that reduces cleaning stress, sharing product tips and tricks to enhance your home cleaning experiences—these are the moments that matter.

So here's to home. Here's to the warmth, love, and memories that make the holiday season truly special. Happy holidays from all of us at Sara's Vac Shack!

👧🏼 Mikayla: Jacob grew up here in Cloquet, and I’m originally from Hector. We met at Mankato State. He was a transfer student and I worked in the office, issuing Student ID’s. I saw him while taking his photo and was well, interested. Of course Jacob tells everyone I was a stalker 😅

👦🏻 Jacob: I worked for B&B Market’s previous owners, John and Kim, for 8 years. They offered me the job initially because they saw me serving up pizza at Southgate in High School and noticed my work ethic, I suppose. I started at the bottom in the meat department, then learned catering, the retail side, and then eventually everything in order to take over.

One night, we were catering together and I casually asked what their plan would be with the business when they retire. The mentioned the’d talked with family, but nobody was led to jump in and take it over. That’s when the conversation turned to the possibility of me buying the business. It was a win/win for both of us.

👧🏼 Mikayla: We got engaged in 2019. The talks at the store started about that same time, and then Covid hit. We were married in May 2021. Jacob purchased the store August 29th of 2021. So yeah, it was an interesting time!

I worked in the medical field until last year. It was getting to be a lot with a young marriage and the store! I wanted to spend more time with Jacob. Even if I get to look at him across the shop as he is working very hard.

👦🏻 Jacob: I like talking with people face-to-face. I spend most of my time in the meat department. Mikayla enjoys and is really good at all the background tasks, of which there are many. Including all the catering organization. We’ve found our own niche in the business.

👧🏼 Mikayla: Some of our most popular events are the larger community get-togethers. We do the Carlton Days and the Fair. Those interactions are so valuable as we get to build community relationships.

For the majority of the year, our brats are a crowd favorite. We have over 25 flavors, and we release specialty flavors for each season. For Fall, we have Apple Pie, for example.

We are now moving into Prime Rib season, where we offer good quality for a good price.

👦🏻👧🏼 Jacob & Mikayla: We couldn’t be a small business without our customers and the community. As a small business, we are very aware of how important your support is, especially as we are new owners. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for your time, Jacob and Mikayla! We love your Brisket, Brats, and Prime Rib. Thankful you do business in Cloquet!

This situation would make most folks squirm. Me? Nah.

In fact, call me crazy, but I actually look forward to conquering the mess. Because I most certainly will.

I look at this challenge like a seasoned technician: 1 part method, 1 part mechanics, 1 part ingenuity.

I analyze the carpet fiber, the pile, check for depth of foreign substance, and make a plan.

I grab my cleaner and get to work. I deploy my plan to perfection.

And I win….every time.

PS: My wife claims I don’t need to overthink the process, that I could just start up the machine and let it do the work. She’s probably right….

Black Friday vs. Small Business Saturday
One is for big box and one is for small biz.

Guess which one we get more pumped about…

The term Black Friday has been defined as the day retail businesses go “in the black” for the year. On this day, Big Business pushes quantity sales (and they must) because they barely make a profit per unit. They have huge ad budgets and ginormous warehouses.

Small business Saturday, however, is a nod to the little guy. Although we don’t want folks to feel pressured to give us attention just because there’s a theme for the day, we do truly appreciate the sentiment.

The fact of the matter is we are proud to serve this community.

We are proof that small but mighty exists, and that’s because you give us a chance and tell your friends about your experience.

So whether it’s a day that marks hitting the black or it’s a day that people recognize the role of small business, just know every day, every interaction matters in our “small” world.

Thank you.

Deep thoughts with the Vac Man…
Greater prosperity = greater waste. In other words, the more disposable income people have, the more products they dispose of.

These days, people look for cheaper, faster, more convenient.

This is in stark contrast to how past generations shopped. People used to know exactly what they bought, how to care for it, and how to make it last.

Grandpa called this stewardship.

Now days, however, most think shopping like Grandpa is “expensive”.

“Expensive” is how a throw-away society would view it, wouldn’t they? They’d focus only on the number debiting their bank account without considering ALL the factors.

Let’s think about this for a minute…

➡️ How many years will the item last?
➡️ Is there upkeep?
➡️ What about the time it takes to fix, shop for, and throw away this same item again… and again?

We Vacuum Folks (and our tribe) are different. Like true investors, we consider all the factors and make the best decision for longevity.

And guess what? Over time, we actually SAVE money. Imagine that.

Grandpa was on to something.

Thanks for joining me for an episode of Deep Thoughts with the Vac Man- until next time!
