Chelone glabra aka White Turtlehead is a native perennial flower that is the host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly and of course the Caterpillar too. The Baltimore Checkerspot is the Maryland State Insect! The Checkerspot is considered endangered, so planting its host plant can help its life cycle. Chelone liked shady conditions and can also tolerate wet or boggy conditions.

Tomato Hornworms may be busy in your tomato patch overnight. These large green caterpillars are the larval state of the five-spotted Hawkmoth. Mostly active at night they can do major damage to the plants and will even eat the green tomatoes as well. Fortunately, they are easy to spot (use of a UV blacklight makes them glow bright green) and remove. In addition, they are susceptible to being used by several parasitic wasps to lay their eggs. If you see a Tomato Hornworms with lots of white growths, leave them be, as they are no longer able to eat your tomatoes and more wasps will soon emerge to continue the cycle.
