When it comes to 1911s, "Drop In" parts don't really mean worry free drop in. Most often of times it means that some custom fitting is required to get everything to fit right. Case in point is this Commander length full length guide rod from Wilson Combat that is going into an ATI FX45-K. The guide rod and recoil spring plug are a little bit too long to fit properly. A little bit of custom fitting is needed to get these components to fit right. This project is a long term project that will include upgraded grips, mainspring housing, night sights, possibly a better threaded barrel, and a trigger job. Other upgrades might be done as needed along the way to make the 1911 Commander a more enjoyable gun to shoot. The whole purpose of this project is to take a base model 1911 and customize it to feel as close as possible to a mid range 1911 while saving a few dollars in the process.

A customer brought to me a Hunter Arms Ideal Grade double barrel shotgun that was passed down to him from his father to work on. Hunter Arms Ideal Grade shotguns were manufactured from 1912 to 1950 with this one in particular manufactured in 1920. The issue at hand was a broken flat spring that administers tension on a locking lever that secures the handguard to the barrels. As a quick search for a replacement part turned up nothing, I was tasked with fabricating a replacement flat spring. I fabricated the replacement flat spring from a spare part that was in my parts bin for a 1911 handgun. The end result was a happy customer and a functioning family heirloom.
