This video demonstrates the difference between shooting supersonic vs. subsonic 500 S&W Magnum through the W.T.F. Barron Suppressor on the Big Horn Armory CAT5 with a 16" barrel.
For the supersonic rounds, we’re shooting Buffalo Bore 440gr hardcast 500 S&W ammunition, moving at roughly 1,800 fps. For the subsonic rounds, we’re also shooting 440gr hardcast ammo, but slowed down below the speed of sound.
The difference is pretty clear.
Even with full-power supersonic 500 S&W loads, the Barron makes a major difference in both sound suppression and recoil reduction compared to shooting unsuppressed. You still hear the supersonic crack, because that bullet is breaking the sound barrier, but the suppressor takes a lot of the edge off the blast and makes the rifle much more manageable.
With subsonic ammo, the experience changes again. Without the supersonic crack, you get a much better sense of what the Barron can really do on a big-bore platform. The result is a heavy-hitting 500 S&W setup that’s far more comfortable to shoot than most people would expect.
The Barron was built specifically for big-bore, non-BMG platforms like:
500 S&W Magnum
500 Auto Max
12.7x42mm / 50 Beowulf-style platforms
458 SOCOM
45-70 Government
and other big-bore hosts
If you’re running serious big-bore power and want to tame the blast, reduce recoil, and make the rifle more enjoyable to shoot, the Barron is worth a serious look.
