Elvis Presley made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in front of 54 million TV viewers, which gave the program an 82.6 rating. Elvis sang "Don't Be Cruel", "Love Me Tender", "Hound Dog" and "Ready Teddy" for host Charles Laughton who was filling in for Sullivan who was recovering from a recent car accident. Laughton mistakenly introduced the singer as "Elvin" Presley. The next day, record stores were swamped with requests for "Love Me Tender", although its release date was weeks away. There were also well organized letter writing campaigns and petitions against Presley, but it was later brought to light that many of the signatures were fictitious or of deceased people.

In an interview with Forbes magazine, former Cream drummer Ginger Baker had some unkind words for Led Zeppelin. "Jimmy's [Page] a good player, I don't think Led Zeppelin filled the void that Cream left, but they made a lot of money." About Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, Baker said that he wasn't "anywhere near what I am. He wasn't a musician." Baker also lashed out at the entire genre of Heavy Metal, saying "I loathe and detest Heavy Metal. I think it is an abortion."

The man with one of the most colorful stage names in show business was born Marvin Lee Aday. Over the years, he has given several different stories on how he got his nickname. The most common one is that he stepped on the foot of his high school football coach, who, instead of cursing, shouted 'Get off my foot you hunk of meatloaf!'.

21 year old Kyu Sakamoto became the first Japanese artist to hit the top of the US singles chart with a song called "Sukiyaki". It was also a #6 hit in the UK. The original title of the song was "Ue O Muite Aruko", which translates "I Look Up When I Walk". Sakamoto was killed on August 12th, 1985 when JAL Flight 123, a Boeing 747, crashed and burned on a thickly wooded mountain about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. He was 43.

Gene Pitney wrote hits for others, including "Today's Teardrops" for Roy Orbison, "Rubber Ball" for Bobby Vee, "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson, and "He's a Rebel" for the Crystals (later recorded by Vikki Carr and Elkie Brooks). "Rebel" kept Pitney's own No. 2 hit "Only Love Can Break a Heart", his highest-charting single in the US, from the top spot on 3 November 1962, the only time that a writer shut himself (or herself) out of the No. 1 position.

Roy Orbison's wife, 25 year old Claudette, was killed when her motorcycle collided with a truck in Gallatin, Texas. Orbison witnessed the accident. She and Roy had recently reconciled after a short split. The Everly Brothers' 1958 hit, "Claudette" had been written for her by Roy.
