This morning we had a customer come in looking to control Buckthorn. After chatting about the dos-and-donts of controlling it, the conversation led into hunting, and then into something really awesome:
The gentleman was a volunteer with the Oconto River Kids, an organization that gives young kids with life threatening illnesses the opportunity of a lifetime: to hunt and fish.

From black bear to game birds, or a simple rod and reel, they give these kids and their family a chance to forget about hardships for a moment and give them an experience they will never forget for the rest of their lives.

To help the children focus on the hunt and soak in all the memories, they help cover expenses, have guides and mentors to prepare them, and even help cover the cost of getting a mount.
It is awesome to see the how rural communities can use recreation/agriculture to make an impact.

Welcome to part 2/2 ! Where Matt finishes his discussion on cover crops and when/what species to use for fall

Getting more questions on Winter Rye, so let's chat for a second (well, pretend we are chatting when, in fact, you are reading):

Seeding rates depend on a few things:
desire for w**d control,
desire for easier no-tilling cash crop next spring,
need for feed (forage) or grain.

There is a fine line between not enough and too much depending on each situation... for example, if you want good w**d control the minimum rate is 75lbs/ac....if you want highest amount forage possible without putting out too much seed 125lbs/ac is a sweet spot in the middle.

Our NOPP plot outside of Colby is showing some really interesting stuff!
Taking a peak at some of the individual plots, we are starting to see that majority of the plots that had crimson+berseem clover planted in the fall (then winter killed/terminated in the spring) have been providing a benefit versus the corn that didnt have cover crop planted ahead of it....no matter the nitrogen rate.
Most of the differences are slight (obviously we will learn more once the combine rolls through), like a little bit better sized cobs/few extra kernels, and some easier to see: the corn is greener where the cover crop was.
Also, we saw that their was LESS debris where the cover was. Everything was no tilled, so nothing would have been "worked in". To our best guess is that with an early amount of nitrogen left from the cover crop this quickened the process of microbes and other biology breaking down the debris, because for the soil to break down carbon (from residue) they need N to continue the process ...so with more upfront education N meant the bio-critter engines were running full speed.
From early testing, there was about 60-90 credits of N left behind by a 50/50 mix of crimson clover and berseem clover that only produced 800-1000 lbs DM/ac biomass.
