Happy Mothers’ Day to everyone out there doing maternal work. 💪 “In its original possessive plural form
Mothers’ Day was invested with a social and political significance. It was a vehicle for public reform, not just for the private celebration of a mother’s singular devotion to her family. “Mother-work” was inclusive, laboring for the needs of individual children and the needs of future generations. Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Juliet Calhoun Blakeley recognized the ability (if not the moral obligation) of women to expand their maternal role into the public sphere.”
“Mothers’ Day Work Clubs [began] in 1858 to fight epidemics such as measles, typhoid and diphtheria that devastated Appalachian towns. The clubs educated families on sanitation, inspected milk, provided medicine and quarantined homes.”
