Marie Laveau was born in New Orleans on September 10, 1801, according to a birth record uncovered by historians. She was a free woman of color who became the most famous spiritual leader associated with Louisiana Voodoo.

Far beyond the frightening legends created around her name, Laveau was known as a healer, herbalist, midwife, religious practitioner, and influential member of her community. She combined African and Caribbean spiritual traditions with elements of Roman Catholicism, reflecting the distinctive culture of nineteenth-century New Orleans.

She offered consultations and held ceremonies at her home on St. Ann Street, eventually becoming the leader of a multiracial religious community. Her reputation grew through her knowledge, charisma, extensive personal connections, and willingness to assist people seeking healing or guidance.
Marie Laveau died in 1881, but her story remains inseparable from New Orleans. History and folklore have blended around her so completely that it can be difficult to separate the real woman from the supernatural legend.

Happy birthday, Marie Laveau—the mysterious queen whose spirit still haunts the history of New Orleans.
