Your flooring choices aren’t always as straightforward as they seem. Here are some lesser-known facts you should consider when shopping for your next flooring selection:
“Waterproof” flooring isn’t really waterproof
A lot of products get labeled waterproof, but in reality, no floor is completely immune to water. Spills might sit on the surface for a bit, but moisture can still find its way underneath or into seams over time. It’s more about water resistance than true waterproofing. A difference people don’t always realize.
Different wood floors scratch in different ways
Not all wood floors wear the same. Softer woods will show scratches easier, while harder species hold up better. Then you’ve got solid vs engineered, different finishes, grain patterns. It all plays into how scratches show up and how noticeable they are. Some floors wear in, others wear out.
Wood flooring is actually a solid environmental choice
When it’s sourced the right way, wood flooring is one of the more sustainable options out there. Managed forests are constantly replanted and maintained, so it’s a renewable resource. On top of that, wood floors last way longer than most alternatives, which means less material getting ripped out and sent to landfills over time.
Where you live matters more than you think
Flooring doesn’t perform the same everywhere. Humidity, temperature swings, and moisture levels all affect how a floor expands, contracts, and holds up. What works great in one area might not be the best choice somewhere else. It really depends on the environment.
