Birds are living descendants of dinosaurs 🦖

Modern birds evolved from a group of two-legged theropod dinosaurs, the same branch of the dinosaur family tree that included the T. rex. Over millions of years, some small, feathered dinosaurs evolved into the birds we know today.

So yes, your backyard chicken is a descendant of dinosaurs! From feathers and wishbones to nesting behavior, birds still carry plenty of dinosaur traits. That means every time you see a bird, you’re looking at the closest thing we have to a living dinosaur. And we like to think that when you collect eggs from your backyard hens, you are collecting little dinosaur eggs (not really, but please humor us).

Our latest design reminds us to slow down and features the eastern painted turtle and the black swallowtail butterfly.

The eastern painted turtle is one of the most recognizable freshwater turtles in the eastern United States. They are often seen basking together on logs, soaking up the sun before slipping into the water at the first sign of danger. Although the species is considered secure across most of its U.S. range, local populations face growing threats from habitat loss and road mortality.

Our new blend, Everybody Eats, is a ’no mess’ blend focused on lower cost and is replacing our Less Mess Blend (for now, at least!). Backyard birders have a range of goals and expectations from this hobby, and for some people (especially in this economy of rising costs), price is the biggest priority. And in densely populated urban and suburban areas, ‘no mess’ blends are an important part of keeping the ground clean, which also helps to decrease rodent activity.

This mix of millet, sunflower hearts, cracked corn, and shelled peanuts is now our lowest-priced blend. We never include traditional ‘filler’ seeds that birds won’t eat, such as milo, oats, and canary seed, which are typically used by big-box stores. Every backyard bird will find something they love, with no mess and a low price. Everybody eats!

I picked you up and took you to the back of my yard, in the small clearing where our nighttime friends roam, clean up our world, and ensure nothing goes to waste.

I picked some flowers for you and put coral bells in your little hands. You really are a beautiful creature. I wondered if your family lives in my yard, and if they came to see you one last time.

Book Summary:

The histories of trees in America are also the histories of Black Americans. Pecan trees were domesticated by an enslaved African named Antoine; sycamore trees were both havens and signposts for people trying to escape enslavement; poplar trees are historically associated with lynching; and willow bark has offered the gift of medicine. These trees, and others, testify not only to the complexity of the Black American narrative but also to a heritage of Black botanical expertise that, like Native American traditions, predates the United States entirely.

In When Trees Testify, award-winning plant biologist Beronda L. Montgomery explores the ways seven trees—as well as the cotton shrub—are intertwined with Black history and culture. She reveals how knowledge surrounding these trees has shaped America since the very beginning. As Montgomery shows, trees are material witnesses to the lives of enslaved Africans and their descendants.

Combining the wisdom of science and history with stories from her own path to botany, Montgomery talks to majestic trees, and in this unique and compelling narrative, they answer.
