Most know me as the guy that invented and makes the NMP Sensors for Williams drop targets. These sensors work perfect to replace those horseshoe sliders. However we have learned that sometimes the sensors will trip from the pop bumper coils that are too close to the drop targets. To eliminate this problem we have come up with MuMetal shields. These are easy to install and block the magnetic pull from the pop bumper coil.
Games that need the sensors are listed below. Games that may need the magnetic shield are marked with a “ * ”. These games have the pop bumper too close to the drop targets.

Williams Drop Targets
Eight years ago I was rebuilding a Williams Disco Fever. The last thing to fix was the drop targets. I installed new horseshoe sliders and circuit boards but found they were unreliable and difficult to adjust. Too tight and they don’t drop – too loose and they don’t register. That’s when I tried magnets and sensors. The first attempt was crude and rough but it showed it would work. Then I tried Flash and Black Out. They worked fine but I knew if I was going sell these I would need something available and reliable. So I started working with different sensors, magnets and the sensor locations.
The magnets and sensors are expensive but they are from the US and they are very reliable. The boards are totally hand assembled the US – they are not machine assembled. I had to keep the price low to be completive with the old horseshoe sliders and circuit boards. Over the past 5 years the sliders have increased in price but I have never increased my price.
And for my Australian friends I have a partner in Melbourne that produces boards there. This saves shipping costs, import fees and shipping time.

NMP Drop Target Sensor History

Back in 2017 I got my first Williams Disco Fever with drop targets. The old horseshoe sliders and boards were dirty and worn so I replaced everything with new parts. I wanted my drop targets to work perfectly. I spent hours adjusting the horseshoes. Too tight and they wouldn’t drop, too loose and they wouldn’t make contact. I asked on several forums how to fix this problem. Some said to add grease but that just attracts dirt requiring cleaning all the time. Others said it’s always been a problem and to just live with it. I knew there had to be a better way. I looked at adding leaf switches like Stern and Bally. Good but not perfect. Then I tried reed switches and magnets. The glass reed switches are very delicate and would often break. Then I found magnetic sensors. These little sensors are very rugged and vibration proof. I have never had a problem with any sensors that I’ve used or sold. They are totally sealed and never need cleaning. Perfect for my application. Next was to figure out the proper combination of sensor and magnet and location of sensors. The magnets had to be the proper strength and distance from the sensors. This took a lot of experimenting to get just right.
Next was to find a manufacture to produce these. I know nothing about producing parts but I thought this would be something everyone with a Williams game could use. I contacted a few manufactures but no one was interested. Too expensive – too much work – too complicated. I made several for myself and friends. They all worked faultlessly. My first boards were an exact replacement for the old horseshoe slider boards without the horseshoes. To make them even easier to install I came up with a 3 bank, 4 bank and 5 bank. All with series traces and diodes installed. I also came up with color coded wiring diagrams for each game. This made them simple to install.
My target price for these was to keep them comparable to the cost of replacing horseshoe sliders and boards. A new board, slider, and diode for a single horseshoe target is about $9.60 – my single board with everything is $10.00. A 3 bank horseshoe target is about $28.80 – my 3 bank is $28.00. And the NMP sensors are much easier to install and no adjusting. I’m retired and not into this for profit. My boards have been in Disco Fever for 8 years and never been cleaned or replaced or adjusted.

I’ve noticed there are still a lot of people that don’t know that we make drop target boards for Williams games. These boards make your targets drop and score every time with no adjusting. No more horseshoe sliders to mess with.
It’s difficult to have a sale when the price of everything is going up. Some parts have more than doubled from when I first started making these drop target boards over 4 years ago. You’ll notice that I have never had a price increase. And now the cost of shipping is going up again.

I finally got the first run of our NVRAM complete. We discovered a way to reduce the read/write cycle effect making even used parts last longer and the new parts last over 100 trillion read/writes. This is built into our NVRAM.
Our NVRAMs are not only quick tested for continuity but every unit is rigorously tested in every memory cell then every cell is erased clean.

The 5101 NVRAM is to replace the 5101 RAM chip used in Bally -17, -35, -133, Stern MPU100, MPU200, Williams 3-7, and Gottlieb 80 games that use battery backup. Never worry about battery leaking again. After installing, remove the old battery.

Some games (Williams and Gottlieb) have the old chips soldered in and must be replaced with a chip socket. New sockets are available on request.

A while back NVRAM was hard to find because new chips (FRAM) were not available making the price go through the roof except for some Chinese parts. But they were often counterfeits and unreliable. What these places do is shave off the top and reprint the part number to make them look new. The problem is even new parts have a limited number of read/write cycles and there’s no way to know how many cycles are on the reprinted parts. We found a way to reduce the read/write cycle effect making the counterfeit parts last longer and the new parts last over 100 trillion read/writes.
We’ve tried and tested several methods and have settled on a design. We made several prototypes of this design and tested them thoroughly. We haven’t decided yet to market these. The parts are not too expensive but the time and labor cost run the price up significantly.
Over time I have made a bunch of these prototypes (all tested good). Here is what I’m going to do. If you purchase a set of NMP drop target sensors for your game I’ll throw in one of these prototype NVRAMs for only $15.00 extra. These NVRAMs are to replace the 5101 RAM to eliminate the need for battery backup. They have been tested in Bally, Stern, and Williams games. Remember most Williams games were made with the 5101 soldered to the board and these games will need an IC socket installed. Obviously this is only while supply lasts. First come – first served.

Now is the time to replace those troublesome drop targets and also get rid of the battery in your game.
