In 1931, Archer Huntington and his wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, bought a stretch of old rice plantation land along South Carolina's Waccamaw Neck so she would finally have somewhere to show her work properly. They called it Brookgreen Gardens, and when it opened to the public in 1932, nobody in the Lowcountry had seen anything quite like it.

The land itself carried history long before the Huntingtons arrived. Four rice plantations once worked that same ground, and the soil under those live oaks and azalea paths remembers labor the gardens don't always talk about. Today the property stretches across roughly 9,100 acres and holds close to 1,445 pieces of American sculpture scattered through the trees, making it one of the oldest public sculpture gardens in the country, alongside a small zoo and trails winding through several different Lowcountry ecosystems.

Every December the gardens still light more than 2,700 candles for the holidays, the same kind of quiet tradition that makes a place feel less like a museum and more like somewhere your family just keeps coming back to.

Have you ever walked through Brookgreen, or is it still on your list of places to see with your own eyes?
