Hercules didn’t defeat Antaeus by overpowering him. He defeated him by understanding him.

In Greek mythology, Antaeus drew his strength from his mother, Gaia—the Earth. As long as he remained in contact with the ground, he could recover his strength.

So Hercules lifted him into the air.

And that was the end of the fight.

Do masks carry evil spirits? 👹

For thousands of years, masks have been used to represent gods, ancestors, animals, spirits, and supernatural beings. But does wearing one mean a spirit actually enters the mask—or the person wearing it?

Joseph Campbell explored the deeper meaning of masks and mythology in The Masks of God. The answer is far more fascinating than simply calling an old mask “haunted.”

In this episode of Anthrofolklorist, we look at what masks have meant across cultures—and why the question isn’t necessarily “Is this mask evil?” but “What did the people who made it believe a mask could become?”

The Saint Who Was Skinned Alive

Why is Saint Bartholomew sometimes depicted carrying his own skin?

According to Christian tradition, the apostle was flayed alive before being beheaded—and his horrific martyrdom became one of the most recognizable symbols in Christian art.

Michelangelo took this imagery to an extraordinary level in The Last Judgment, where Bartholomew holds his own flayed skin.

But look closely at the face in that skin…

There may be more to it than you think.

Why is a horseshoe considered lucky? 🐎

For centuries, horseshoes have been more than tools for protecting a horse’s hooves. In European folk tradition, they became protective charms—objects believed to guard homes from evil and misfortune.

Made of iron, surrounded by folklore, and often placed above doors, the humble horseshoe became an apotropaic object: something intended to ward off harm.

At Anthrofolklorist, we’re interested in the strange stories hiding inside ordinary objects—and the human need to give them meaning.
