Front Range Rocket Recovery

Front Range Rocket Recovery FR3 crafts custom elliptical parachutes for model rockets, specializing in creative patterns and higher gore counts. I am happy to explore options.

FR3 chutes are characterized by a high level of fit and finish with 100% flat felled seams and rolled hems to present a smooth, clean canopy and provide extra strength. I use 200 lb braided Spectra for the suspension lines. I offer designs and patterns with higher gore counts and more in-gore piecing than many other vendors. This, coupled with the seam finishing, drives my labor costs. I know I'm

more expensive than other vendors for chutes of similar diameters. I think you'll appreciate the quality and uniqueness of my offerings as worth the extra expense. If I don't have a pattern template made, feel free to ask about additional design work. I am NAR Level 2 certified, an Air Force veteran, and a one-person shop. I started FR3 as a way to support my own rocketry pursuits after receiving positive feedback on chutes I'd sewn for several of my rockets. Details of my methods and materials can be found in Apogee Component's Peak of Flight newsletter #491: https://www.apogeerockets.com/Peak-of-Flight/Newsletter491

I do not share customer email or contact numbers with third parties.

Had some fun in Pueblo yesterday.

I flew my 4" T-LOC with a 30" FR3 ellipsoid and my "mini Higgs Farm" on a rotofoil. Both recovered successfully, although the mini Higgs did find the tallest tree around (a whopping 12' high...). See comments for the roto in action.

Want to get a look at some of the FR3 accessories before ordering? ModelRocketGuy will be bringing a selection of accessories to Airfest (KS) and High Frontier (OK) in September. He'll have soft links and covers for the JL Chute Releases and altimeters among other things.

Going back through my messages over the past couple weeks, I feel like I've dropped a thread somewhere as I transitioned back to teaching in the new semester. If you feel like you've been left hanging for a follow-up, please accept my apologies and drop me a note to get the ball rolling again.

Thanks

Have you tried soft links in place of metal quick links to connect your airframe components? These Technora links are made from 950 lb or 2500 lb braid, great for midpower through monster L3 class birds.

I have a couple dozen of each size (mini 950 lb, small 950 or 2500 lb, and large 2500 lb). $6, $7, $8, $9, respectively.

I've been using the last few days to sort out the workflow for resurrecting (with permission) Valkyrie's soft links and rotofoils and have a start on building up some stock. Next week, I head back to school as a half-time teacher so my output will drop as I concentrate more on chutes than accessories. I'll still work them where I can but probably won't be able to fill your 20-piece order quickly... ;) I am waiting for physical templates for the rotos so may have a lag in making more once the pre-cuts I got run out.

In the meantime, I'll go ahead and advertise these.

Rotofoils (various colors):
12" $11
15" $12
18" $14
24" $20

Soft links:
950 lb mini $6 ea
950 lb small $7 ea
2500 lb small $8 ea
2500 lb large $9 ea

Note: the weight on the soft links is the raw cord strength. For each loop you make, 1.6x is a reasonable multiplier for the link strength. For safety, I would stay under 20% as your WLL. E.g., a mini link with two loops through your gear would be 950 x 2 x 1.6 x 0.2= 608 lb as a reasonable load.

DISCLAIMER: Soft links are not for use in any activity (skydiving, rock climbing, etc.) where human life and safety are at stake.

Today's project, a 10' chute.

I picked up a used Bernina 530 last week and this was the first major project for it. What a joy to sew on. It feeds the thin nylon beautifully.

Some of you know that Ben, the owner of BAMA Recovery and later Valkyrie Recovery Systems, was my mentor as I learned to make parachutes. We have been friends for several years. With Valkyrie closing down recently, Ben offered me a trove of materials and design info with permission to resurrect products under my own brand.

With that in mind, his soft links are the first item I'm looking to bring back. These are made with either 950 lb or 2500 lb Technora cord, an aramid fiber similar to Kevlar. I'm planning to carry three lengths: mini, small, and large with breaking strengths from about 1700 to 15,000 lbs depending on cord size and number of loops.

I am not quite ready for production but expect to be up and running in a few weeks.
