Cheyenne Mountain School District 12 is already getting prepared for this winter season, and you should too❄️

Here’s why⬇️

As meteorologists are predicting a Super El Niño event for 2026, the southern Rockies are shaping up to get a significantly above- average snowfall season. Many are comparing these readings to match historic benchmarks such as 1982-83 and 1997-98. These events are quite rare and only happen every 10-20 years.

Why will this Super El Niño event affect us in Southern Colorado?

- the developing El Niño pattern is triggering a shift toward monsoon season in the fall/winter months
- This event amplifies the subtropical jet stream, bringing a lot more moisture directly into the southwest and southern Rockies
- With weakened trade winds from the east to west, enormous pools of warm water will slosh eastward toward the Americas. In turn, this brings significant amounts of moisture into our atmosphere due to the massive transfer of warm surface water
