The House Of Hathor Columbia, S.C. LLC Promoting Family, Love and Peace The House of Hathor is a unique and vital resource based on the understanding that there is in fact a void in our community.

• The mission of The House of Hathor is to provide a (w)holistic environment offering healthy living through physical, spiritual, mental and emotional knowledge of self. We are family and community oriented promoting the seven principles of Kwanzaa which celebrates life: Unity (Umoja); Self Determination (Kujichgulia); Collective Work & Responsibility (Ujima); Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa); Purpo

se, (Nia); Creativity (Kuumba) and Faith (Imani). The House of Hathor will fill this void not only with our smoothies, drinks, aromatherapy, skin care products, African art and African apparel but also through soft skills education, community activism, and service.

I wasn't planning on rapping.
About halfway through my presentation, one of the young brothers mentioned that he rapped. I told him I did too.
Immediately, another student challenged me, "Spit something right now."
Before I could respond, Ms. Cynthia Hardy smiled and said, "He stays ready."
😂 So I gave them a verse from What's Yo Name.
The workshop was already going well, but that moment created a bond.
They realized I wasn't just another adult coming to lecture them. I understood their world. They leaned in even more. We talked about culture. We talked about identity. We talked about purpose. We talked about where they wanted to go in life.
When it was over, several students stayed behind to get my information. Some wanted help with their music. Others wanted advice about school, their future, and how to build a plan for their lives.
That's what youth engagement looks like.
It's not about entertaining kids. It's about building enough trust that they'll let you speak into their lives.
I've spent decades developing that skill. I've trained educators, mentored young people, built schools, and watched students discover gifts they didn't know they had.
That's one of the many reasons I'm uniquely qualified to serve as the next Superintendent of Education for South Carolina.
Education changes when young people believe the person standing in front of them actually sees them.

Most of us grew up learning about Rosa Parks as “the lady on the bus.”

That’s it.
That’s all they gave us.

But when our students actually sat down and studied her life at The Uhuru Academy, something clicked. One of our young sisters in the program spoke about growing up in mostly white schools and how every February the whole class would turn and stare at her anytime Black history came up. Like somehow she was supposed to carry the weight of an entire people by herself.

A lot of Black youth know that feeling.

What moved me was hearing her realize — in real time — that Rosa Parks was so much bigger than the sanitized version most schools give our children. She was organized. Brave. Disciplined. Political. Dedicated to Black people long before and long after the bus boycott.

That’s why we do what we do.

At Uhuru Academy, Black history is not a side lesson, a holiday, or a “special month.” It is a foundation for identity, confidence, and vision. When young people understand who they come from, they move differently.

This summer we’re bringing that same energy into our Online Summer School.

Not just tutoring.
Not just worksheets.
Not just keeping youth “busy” for the summer.

We’re building confidence.
We’re strengthening academics.
We’re helping young people develop vision for their lives.

And honestly… our children deserve that.
