Something big happened today.
As we prepared to open our bookstore in the fall of 2012, we had some damaged books that needed to be recycled. We decided to use them to built a 'temporary' front counter. 'Temporary' in that it was only meant to last a year or so until we built a more stable, permanent structure.
As the counter became one of the most photographed spots in the store, other projects were prioritized over the rebuild. Twelve years later, the 'temporary' counter was weathered and worn, and in need of an update. So, a few months ago, we asked one of our customers, Ashley, a wood artist, if she would be interested in creating a new, more permanent counter for the bookstore. She said she would love to.
On Sunday, February 2, 2025, Ashley installed this incredible work of art. After the install was complete, I sat alone in the bookstore for a while, just staring at it, thinking about all this new counter is about to witness.
You see, this isn't just a piece of furniture, it's part of the community now. It's a destination, a place people will show their friends and say "Look! This is what I was telling you about!" It's part of our lives now. It's the place behind which I will spend many years of my life. And unlike the previous structure, it's a place I can lean on, and not have to worry about it falling over on me.
Ashley, thank you, we couldn't be happier with this amazing counter.
