Sans Souci is a local not-for-profit organization whose mission is to be the community partner that improves the ability of our neighbors to support themselves "without worry." Since 1979, Sans Souci (French, meaning “without worry”) has operated a thrift store in Columbus, Indiana that serves the Bartholomew County community in a variety of capacities. To run the thrift store, Sans Souci fully re

lies on tangible donations from community members. Sans Souci graciously accepts donations of everything from clothing to furniture to household items such as home décor and books. Donated items get priced and placed in the thrift store and funds that are raised from the thrift store support the three core programs: no-cost, low-cost and employee development. No-Cost: Sans Souci allows any Bartholomew County community member in need to shop free of charge for essential items such as clothing, shoes and winter coats. Low-Cost: By intentionally pricing items in the thrift store at a low cost, we provide opportunities and support self-sufficiency for community members to purchase items they need at a cost they can afford. Employee Development: Sans Souci hires individuals who have struggled to obtain or retain reliable employment elsewhere. Through training and one-on-one attention, Sans Souci works to remove the barriers in our employee's lives with the goal of having each employee reach self-sufficiency. It is only because of our amazing donors, shoppers and volunteers that we can combat poverty in our community and work towards our goal of having everyone in our community live life "without worry."

A common question we get asked is whether we accept holiday items year-round- and the answer is yes!

When we receive a holiday-specific item, it is priced and then placed into a box just like these. Whenever a box is full, it gets loaded up and taken to our storage building until it’s time for that holiday!

So yes, feel free to bring your holly jolly, spooky, patriotic, or festive decorations any time of the year. Whether it's Christmas in July or Halloween in February, we'll happily save those items until the season rolls around again.

By storing holiday merchandise year-round, we're able to keep seasonal items out of landfills, make the most of generous donations, and ensure our shoppers can find great holiday treasures when the time comes.

We’ve got good news and bad news…

Good news: the $0.25 clothing tables are coming back 🥳
Bad news: the $0.25 clothing tables are coming back 😬

We know this style of sale brought some mixed feelings last time, but with the large volume of clothing we currently have, tables are the most efficient way for us to process inventory by skipping the time-consuming hanging step.

Starting Monday, June 8th, all clothing will be just $0.25! As rack clothing sells down, we’ll transition to tables throughout the store.

At the end of each day, remaining table clothing will be pulled for recycling and fresh inventory will be restocked daily- so there will be new finds EVERY DAY!

This sale will run through Saturday, June 13th and we plan to begin bringing the racks back on Monday, June 15th. We can’t wait to see what deals you will find!

Question: "Why do you have a semi by your Donation Center?"

Short answer: It's for recycled clothing, shoes, and other textiles! ♻️

Longer answer: Sometimes donated items aren't able to be sold due to damage (a missing button, small tear, stain, etc.), or they simply don't find a new home in our store. Rather than sending those items to a landfill, we sell them by the pound to our recycling partner, World Mission. Once a trailer is full, World Mission picks it up and provides us with an empty trailer.

Last year alone, Sans Souci recycled 368,180 pounds of textiles! Textiles include items such as clothing, shoes, belts, purses, and hats.

Not only does textile recycling provide additional funding to support our programs, but it also helps keep usable materials out of landfills. It's one more way we're working to create a community AND environment where everyone can live life "without worry!"

Sans Souci is closed today in honor of Memorial Day. We have deep gratitude to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country- thank you for protecting our freedom and for truly helping us to live life "without worry."
