Meet Donna McKnight! ❤️

Donna stopped into The Red Stable recently to say hello and share some wonderful memories of growing up in German Village. She moved to the neighborhood at just 6 years old in the 1940s and grew up at 825 S. 5th Street.

She remembers German Village long before The Red Stable 🐴 was a gift shop — and before Schmidt’s was a restaurant! On her walk home from school, she would pass the Schmidt’s slaughterhouse (where the Schmidthof condos are today) and still remembers hearing the pigs squeal. 🐖

At age 16, her neighbor Phil Kientz Sr. taught her how to lay brick sidewalks — a skill with deep roots here in German Village. And in 1968, Donna was a house host for the very first Haus und Garten Tour at the Kientz home — which today is our Airbnb next door to The Red Stable!

Donna still remembers many of the families who lived in the neighborhood and the homes they called their own.

We love when longtime residents and visitors stop in and share their stories. It’s a reminder of just how much history surrounds us every day.
