Most people driving down West Broad Street have no idea one of Columbus’ darkest forgotten locations used to stand there.

Before the state offices, highways, and BMV buildings took over the area, the old Columbus Insane Asylum dominated the west side for over a century. Thousands of patients passed through its halls before the massive psychiatric hospital slowly fell into decay, was abandoned, and ultimately demolished. Today, almost nothing remains physically… but the stories never really disappeared.

I put together a deep dive into:

Most people in Columbus drive past Camp Chase Cemetery without realizing one of the city’s most haunted locations is sitting right there on the west side.

From the Lady in Gray placing flowers on Confederate graves… to reports of ghostly soldiers dancing in the cemetery at night… Camp Chase has some of the darkest and strangest lore in Columbus history. From Camp Chase Cemetery and the dark history of the old Columbus Insane Asylum to Hilltop Summer Jam, Songs on Sullivant, Westgate Park events, and local makers spaces, the area has its own identity that most people outside the west side never get to experience.
