Ooh…are we ready for the dark and spooky vibes or bright and cozy feels? Maybe all of them?!

Let’s begin with warm sensations! What could be comfier than a new cookbook from none other than Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa? Dip into” Five Tastes” by Fuchsia Dunlop for delicious recipes with Chinese flavors and end your meal with “The Joy of Cookies” from James Beard Award-winning baker Joanne Chang.

Continuing on with the heat building, take your pick from new holiday romance. Yes, you read that right. Christmas is in two of the titles. We get it if you’re a “no-Christmas-until-after-Halloween” person. Our recommendation is to put it near the bottom of your TBR stack and let the anticipation build until November 1. For those of you with your Christmas trees up already: you’re welcome.

New novels – including this week’s genre fiction – are a satisfying mix of dark and light, offering seasonally-perfect scares, charm, secrets, and magic for every reader’s choosing.

Even young readers can select from adventures featuring a wimpy kid, a black cat, or dragons. (Look how stunning they are!)

Our book groups will follow the theme, too, from the star-crossed paranormal love story of “Grim Tidings” to the extraordinarily brilliant light of “Dolly Parton, Songteller.”

And then, just as we started, we return to warmth: the kind-heartedness of a young woman striving to knit dozens of beanies and blankets to help babies in the NICU feel wrapped in love.

Brilliant sunshine highlighting gorgeous fall leaves.

It’s officially “Sweata Weatha” which means we’re officially into cozy reading season, too.
We’re ready to make suggestions, here and in the bookshop, should you get out in the brisk sunshine to visit us!

Speaking of cozy, let’s start with “The Story Baker” by Carsten Henn. You’ll be charmed by this small-town story of a woman who finds solace, love, and community in the most unlikely of places.

“Bad Words” by Rioghnach Robinson is a whip-smart romance set in the world of publishing that dips into the unique complexities of our relationships with parents, siblings, and friends. It also reminds us of the power of books and how they shape – and often save – those who are devoted to them.

For a blend of romance and fantasy with a dark twist, pick up “West of Wicked,” by Nikki St. Crowe and find yourself in a reimagined land of Oz. In another spin on a familiar tale, Erynne Rivers’ “Wench” finds Maid Marian choosing between the family she’s always known or the love she can pick for herself.

Tanya Pell’s “This B Just Won’t Die” is a great spooky season match! This feminist slasher takes on Hollywood’s beauty standards as an aging “Scream Queen” is pursued in real life by a killer impersonating the antagonist of her films.

Imagine pet-sitting a feline with a very mysterious secret. Jason Rekulak’s fully illustrated novel, “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” is an intensely plotted supernatural thriller that lives up to his reputation as having a “freakishly fertile imagination” (The New York Times).

For nonfiction fans, “The Havana Syndrome” by Michael Rey and Oriana Zill de Granados is an approachable read that deftly uncovers a true spy mystery, and Robert F. Prevost – now Pope Leo XIV – reveals, through his original writings, the spiritual foundation that led him to the papacy.

We haven’t forgotten the Littles! These books will distract them as you slide their tiny arms into jackets before you head outside! (IYKYK!)

Excitement is building for our Midnight Release Party on October 26 for “A Court of Splintered Harmony,” the sixth book in Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series.

Romance, danger, and intrigue await you within the pages of the book, and you can anticipate refreshments, games, trivia, crafts, and fun surprises at the party in the castle on the corner! Costumes are welcome but not required.

It’s not too late to preorder the book from us! Order online, call us at the store, or stop by either location. Everyone who preorders with us is welcome to attend the party at no charge. If you’re not purchasing a copy of the book from Viewpoint, $10 will let you party until midnight with us!

All attendees must RSVP by email to [email protected], by phone (812-376-0778), or when you’re in the store. We need a final count no later than Saturday, October 24, so please don’t wait!

Over 70 book lovers gathered at Bespoke and Chapter Two to read in the company of others who share their passion for devouring meaningful words…and consuming delicious nibbles and sipping seasonal beverages…all in blissful silence.

That is not a table sitting next to our smiling bookseller.
It is a stack of new books, and that’s not even all of them…

Here we are again, bringing you a fifth blockbuster week of new releases just since Labor Day.

We don’t expect this rush of new books to stop any time soon, but we do want you to know that NOW is the time to buy, especially if you plan to gift any of these titles to your loved ones.
- Bestselling authors’ signed editions may not be here if you wait.
- Deluxe editions will be gone when all of the copies from the first printing are sold.
- Scary stories – from mysteries to thrillers to horror (yes, horror!) – are flying out the door with spooky season fans.
- Popular fantastical adventures are providing an escape for those finding the world a little heavy.
- Boxed sets – the perfect holiday gift – won’t be here long.
- We always see a boost in interest in history, biography, and cooking as the holidays approach. Get these gifts now!

We know we’re talking about holidays other than Halloween well before the Great Pumpkin arrives.
We promise you’ll only see autumn decorations until then, but this also isn’t a false alarm.
- We can’t reorder signed or deluxe editions.
- Some new releases are already arriving more than a week late.
- We’re being warned that many reprints won’t be available until 2027.
Don’t be disappointed; buy them now.

Now, on to happier news! We still expect more eagerly anticipated books…and we are hosting parties…and we’ll give you a dozen reasons to hit the back roads to visit very unique bookstores.

As the days shorten, the dark hours lengthen, and the temperatures turn chillier, it’s the perfect time to…

When “she-who-is-a-professional-photographer” is gone, the mice here at Viewpoint DON’T play. We know we can’t fill her shoes, but we’re here with our very best effort to show you some new books that we’re excited to share.

All new titles are 10% off every Tuesday, but we’re going to extend that ALL WEEK because 1) deliveries are running late and we won’t have a few of our new titles until later this week, 2) it’s the season for SO MANY excellent new books and a discount will help you buy more for gifting or your own collection, and 3) we want to thank you for keeping us company. Speaking of that – should you be one of our camera-shy friends – this week is the perfect opportunity to sneak in while “she-who-is-always-ready-to-take-your-picture” is gone. (Spread the word.)
