🕹️ Trivia Answer

Hubert + Cubes = Q*bert!

During development, the character was called Hubert, while Cubes was one of the names considered for the game.

The two were eventually combined into “Cubert,” which was stylized as Q*bert—giving one of arcade gaming's most recognizable characters his permanent name.

And those famous @! #?@! symbols? They represented Q*bert's cartoon swearing and were even considered as a title for the game at one point.

Battlezone!

Atari released Battlezone as a commercial arcade game in 1980. Its first-person vector graphics caught the attention of the U.S. Army, which later asked Atari to develop a modified version for training gunners on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

The resulting prototype became known as the Bradley Trainer (and sometimes Army Battlezone). Only a very small number of prototypes were produced.

So an arcade game wasn't created from a military simulator—the arcade game came first, then the military came calling.

Fantasy by SNK (1981)!

Released in October 1981, Fantasy is widely recognized as the first arcade game to feature a continue screen. Instead of starting over after a Game Over, players had 10 seconds to insert another coin and jump right back into the action.

A few years later, Gauntlet by Atari Games (1985) popularized the continue countdown, making it a familiar feature for an entire generation of arcade players.

One small innovation that changed arcade gaming forever.
