Our family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love this community has shown since Steve’s passing. Every card, call, and kind word has been a comfort.

The sign along Highway 29 has celebrated and mourned a lot over the years with this community.

Putting Steve’s name up there was hard, but nothing could be more fitting. This place was his life, and you all were a big part of it.

We are deeply saddened to share that Steve Christy passed away yesterday, July 22nd, at the age of 91, just a month shy of his 92nd birthday.

Steve started Christy’s Nursery in 1964 on two acres behind his home on Poplar Tent Road. Steve and his wife, Rachel, were high school sweethearts, and the two spent over sixty years together, building the business and a life side by side. Even into his later years, Steve kept up long days tending to many matters at the nursery himself. Steve and Rachel were longtime members of Gilwood Presbyterian Church, a community that meant a great deal to both of them.

Steve was preceded by Rachel in 2016. He will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the countless friends he made over a lifetime in this community.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held Wednesday, July 29, at 3:00 PM at Gilwood Presbyterian Church, with the family receiving friends beginning at 12:30 PM.
