You may have heard there are two comic book “holidays” this week.

Saturday September 26 is Local Comic Shop Day , sponsored by the retailer trade group ComicsPro. We hope everyone makes the time to visit your local comic shop!

Friday September 25 is something called “National Comic Book Day.” While there is no direct involvement with the comics industry and , I thought it might be instructive to fill you in on its origins.

When trying to find how and where this “holiday” started, you’ll eventually get to https://nationaldaycalendar.com

That calendar is basically a guide for educators to spur lesson plans and other school activities. NCBD has been on teacher calendars since at least the late ‘70s.

There’s really no “origin” for like Free Comic Book Day for example (hi there!), but it’s still a day to celebrate .

What it all gets down to, though, is it means more kids are probably doing related activities...and that’s an awesome thing!

At Flying Colors and other comic shops all over, we’re all about celebrating comics every day of the year!

So Happy National Comic Book Day on Friday September 25... and be sure to celebrate Local Comic Shop Day on Saturday September 26.

Always more memories (and trivial explanations) ahead at Flying Colors Comics!

The Marvel Creator Collection No. 2: “Whatever Happened to Scorpio?”: The Complete Jim Steranko at Marvel
On sale date: November 17, 2026
Pre-order NOW at Flying Colors Comics!

Collected here for the first time, in a visually striking two-volume set, are the complete works of Jim Steranko at Marvel, the art and stories that dazzled readers and redefined what comic books were capable of.

Schooled in Golden Age comics, Steranko (born under the sign of Scorpio) merged pulp heroism with modern, cinematic graphic design in a way that transformed the look of Marvel’s Captain America, X-Men, Daredevil, and Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. His late-1960s run on S.H.I.E.L.D. was the essence of cool, distilling the era’s spy boom into a new level of sophisticated comic-book storytelling!

Flashback Friday!
Going back to 2004 when FlyCoJoe made a quick trip to meet Archie & the gang in Riverdale.

FlyCoJoe's review of his Riverdale trip: "Good people, excellent burgers and malts...actually quite a lot like Concord... but the comic shop sure left a lot to be desired." :)
